When to Keep Your Child Home From School or Send to the Doctor

Viral pharyngitis. The oropharynx is swollen a...

Image via Wikipedia

Our preschooler gets sick quite often, studies indicate nearly 10 colds a year is average for school-age children, if you are looking for a safe and effective way to relieve your child's symptoms check out these ideas from triaminic.com.

There is also a quiz to take to help you decide if it is a time to send your child to the doctor, this could be especially handy for first time parents or parents who worry whenever their child is sick. Don't worry you're not alone, according to a survey conducted for Triaminic®, nearly 83% of parents worry they sent their child back to school too soon!

Read on for useful information to help you make the right call on your child's next sick day.
Consider keeping your child home if he or she:
* Has a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher
* Has been vomiting
* Has symptoms that prevent him or her from participating in school, such as:
o Excessive tiredness or lack of appetite
o Productive coughing, sneezing
o Headache, body aches, earache
o Sore throat*
*A minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but a severe sore throat could be strep throat even if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep throat in children are headache and stomach upset. Contact your pediatrician as your child needs a special test to determine if it is strep throat.
Keep your child home until his or her fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication. Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours. Returning to school too soon may slow the recovery process and can unnecessarily expose others to illness.
Please note, these tips should not take the place of medical advice from a doctor or pediatrician. Parents should also be aware of guidelines specific to their child's school.
The flu is serious! Call your pediatrician at the first sign of flu symptoms, which typically come on suddenly, including:
* High fever
* Chills
* Head ache, body aches, ear ache
* Nausea, vomiting
* Dry cough
If you're unsure about the best way to treat your child's cold or flu, ask your school nurse, doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider.

Join The Ford Fiesta Movement

I just came across this contest via fiestamovement.com and thought I'd share it with my readers and especially other moms who might want or need a new car to get around in.  See below for all the details.

As a driver, you’ll receive monthly secret assignments from Ford Mission Control that will take you to places you’ve never been, to meet people you’ve never met, and to experiences you’ll never forget. And you’ll bring your friends and followers along for the ride.

We’ll hand you the keys to your own Fiesta for a six month period, and we’ll even handle the gas and insurance for you, too.

Many will apply. Only 100 will be chosen. Show us you’ve got what it takes to join the Fiesta Movement.

Diaper Change

Image by -cr via Flickr

I just received this in an email from Pullups© and thought I'd share it here. If you have a child that is potty training, this is a great opportunity to win a big kid room makeover as incentive and a fun way to keep them motivated!

I know when we finally trained our oldest son, he was nearly three. We finally encouraged him by getting him excited about going to "Fun Camp"...which was a three week program at a nearby My Gym© for kids. He really looked forward to it and enjoyed the time he spent there. The only way he was going to attend was to finally get potty trained. So why not help your big kid get motivated and enter to win something in the process!

Time to get into the potty time groove! Learn the dance craze that has every Big Kid® moving and shaking to the potty. Then grab your "Mom-cam" and enter your video for a chance to win a kid's room makeover. Get all of the details here.

Love-Hate Weaning Baby

Breastfeeding symbol

Image via Wikipedia

My sons are so sweet and cute, giving me lots of kisses and hugs before daddy puts them to bed...it is so hard not to snuggle with baby...weaning is the hardest thing about breastfeeding.

When I first began nursing my oldest, I struggled and cried in the beginning wondering why something so natural seemed so hard. Through the help of the lactation consultant and determination I was able to nurse our oldest until he gave up nursing on his own at around seven months.

Now that we have our second child, I have chosen to nurse him as well. The nursing on demand and from the start went easier than it did with our first son, however the weaning is not going as easily. While I had hoped to nurse our first son until he was a year, I have not had that problem with our second son. He is nearly two years old and not yet willing to self-wean, unless my husband is home and I can go in another room. Otherwise, if it's just me and the boys, my baby wants mommy time for naps, bedtime, or snuggle time.

It is so hard to say no or to feel like I am denying him his mommy time and comfort, yet at the same time my husband and I feel it's time to start weaning him. After all having my body back and my time back is something I tend to miss after nearly two years of nursing. Yet, at the same time it's a love- hate feeling because this will be our last child and I hate to feel guilty about not giving him mommy time especially when he's crying for me and my dear husband isn't home to help. So when my husband isn't around, baby gets his mommy time. However, as he gets older I realize it only gets more and more difficult to wean him and I am not one to nurse until he's six!

I know many people continue to nurse their children until the child is ready to self-wean or by the age of four is common in some parts of Europe. The average age for moms to stop nursing babies in the US is about two years old, while the pediatricians recommend at least one year.

What are your experiences with weaning? How did you finally end it with your last child? Please share in the comments.

Are you a bad mommy?

mommy

Succesful WAHMs are bad mommy's

Ok - maybe not all of them, but I sure as hell am.

Image via Wikipedia

Seriously though, if you try and convince me that you are able to keep your house clean, interact with your children effectively, not keep the television on all day, plus you’re the most successful mommy on the block with your business…

Jen at badmommyblogger.com wrote the post above and I had to share it here because I can relate to her so much in this post. While I never claimed to be a supermom or great mom, I do the best I can to try and find time for me and my interests. I also hope that in the process the time I am spending on my blog or networking online I am able to contribute financially to my family in some way. While I am not a professional blogger or full-time work at home mom, I find I spend a lot of time online, especially when my husband is home, because I enjoy it, always have and always will. Twitter of course doesn't help with my Internet addiction...but the fact that I enjoy technology and finding new sites is another story. Either way I feel like a bad mommy many times throughout the day and work hard to make sure I spend time with my kids. However, there are times I need mommy time and they need to learn independence...so I will leave the tv on or ask them to play nicely together while I have some time out. This doesn't always go smoothly, but if I don't take my mini time outs by five o'clock I am ready to pull my hair out.

How about you? Do you find that you feel like a bad mommy because you need time outs while you are at home with your kids? Do you feel like you don't spend enough time interacting,teaching, cooking, cleaning and engaging with your kids while you work at home? Share your experiences and ways you cope.

All I Wanted Was Children

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

If you haven't heard the news about the octuplet mom, Nadia, then you have been out of touch. While Nadia's story first brought excitement and thrills to the media and listeners alike, her story has now become controversial and has opened her and her family to public scrutiny and debate.

I don't necessarily agree with her methods of conception and why she did what she did to have children, 'because she always wanted children'. I have to commend her for surviving the pregnancy and successfully bringing these precious little babies into the world. I pray they will all continue to thrive and survive.

Having children is not an easy task with a spouse, I can't even begin to imagine what raising premature octuplets along with her other six children ranging in age from 2 to 7 years old will be like, all while living at home with her parents and planning to return to school to  finish her master's degree. Either she is supermom/superhuman or she is naive to what she is about to take on and is using her pregnancy and now media attention to gain financially.

I can't blame her for seeking the financial support, considering her family is unable to support her and her children financially...however like many the question remains...why did she have so many embryo's implanted at a time when she is not financially independent? She claims she will not support herself and children with welfare, but the help of friends, family and her church and of course new found fame. I think this is great, however to expect it is a bit selfish. One should not plan a family until they are mentally, spiritually and financially able to do so, especially if they are depending on others for housing.

Regardless of what happens, I am grateful she kept all her babies, and did not choose to terminate or dispose of any of her embryo's. I hope she will be successful and able to raise and care for all fourteen of her children. She appears to have a lot of love in her heart. I also hope the father will one day become involved in their lives since she is friends with the donor/father. I pray the negative media and attention she is receiving ends soon, so that her children do not suffer the repercussions and finger pointing as they get older.

How do you feel about this story and do you feel her decision to have so many children out of wedlock was a wise decision?

Infanticide or a 'botched abortion'?

Umbilical cord of a three-minute-old child.  A...
Image via Wikipedia
I came across this article today via twitter and the site newsbusters.org, the article headline by the AP is "A Badly Botched Abortion"
Eighteen and pregnant, Sycloria Williams went to an abortion clinic outside Miami and paid $1,200 for Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique to terminate her 23-week pregnancy.

Three days later, she sat in a reclining chair, medicated to dilate her cervix and otherwise get her ready for the procedure.Gonzalez came in and cut the umbilical cord with scissors, then placed the baby in a plastic bag, and the bag in a trash can.

Williams' lawsuit offers a cruder account: She says Gonzalez knocked the baby off the recliner chair where she had given birth, onto the floor. The baby's umbilical cord was not clamped, allowing her to bleed out. Gonzalez scooped the baby, placenta and afterbirth into a red plastic biohazard bag and threw it out.

This is appalling and another reason abortion needs to end! Pro-abortionists think they are giving women a choice and a right to end a pregnancy, instead they are giving these unethical clinics permission to kill...while many are funded with our tax dollars. Support adoption not abortion!

United Nations' threat: No more parental rights

A United Nations human rights treaty that could prohibit children from being spanked or homeschooled, ban youngsters from facing the death penalty and forbid parents from deciding their families' religion is on America's doorstep, a legal expert warns. The next step in the State raising your child. Other countries that have ratified this treaty have done some pretty terrible things with it. For example, in Belgium, if your child is born and the doctor considers it 'deficient', the doctor can choose to terminate your child without your consent up to the age of 12 months. This is just one example.And the madness continues...every day I read another story like this and find it hard to believe we live in the US. What is becoming of this country and the world when the UN wants to dictate how we raise our kids? How do you feel about this and how much control should our government have over our children?
