Exercising While Pregnant--My Only Sanity!

As a mother, I spend every day looking after everyone else's needs: my husband, my son, my mother, my friends, etc. I don't really take very much time for myself. That is just the way it is, and I'm okay with that. But I do take time out of my day to exercise, which is my only sanity. Especially since I'm pregnant, I need it even more. As the hormones in my body are surging and emotions can flair, the exercise gives me focus and purpose in an otherwise unstable emotional environment. My husband is always bragging to his friends about how level headed I am. Oh, don't get me wrong, I do have my moments, but I can only imagine how bad I would be without the exercise.

You see when I exercise, it's for me. It's something I do for myself so that I can take care of everyone else. I get it all out. It's really stress relief with an added benefit. I focus on me and my body, and then when I've sweated all the toxins away, I can go back to my family and be calm and happy. The days that I don't get any exercise are the days that I feel run down, tired, irritable, and pregnant.

And of course, the exercise I do helps my unborn son get an edge up in life. Fitness during pregnancy has been tied to higher intelligence, less allergies and diseases, athleticism, etc. Not only am I helping myself and my family, but I'm helping my son develop in the womb with super powers.

I've been getting alot of compliments lately by other women on how I exercise during pregnancy and what I'm able to do pregnant. Because I was fit before I got pregnant, I'm able to do more than the average woman. Losing that 104 lbs. conditioned my body and gives me stamina that I wouldn't normally have. I can run, jog, do Taebo, Pilates, Yoga, boot camp, etc. And I do a good job of keeping up with the girls that aren't pregnant. Of course, I do stop myself when I am exerting myself too much, but I just keep a solid pace and then dive back into it when I can. The other thing I do is chew gum because it keeps me more hydrated, or at least I feel that way.

For more information on pregnancy, fitness and nutrition, check out Bookieboo. There are several moms on this site that are having fit pregnancies. We've been doing it together and sharing our ups and downs. Pregnancy is tough enough, but a fit pregnancy has it's own challenges.

Have a great week!

Real or Man-made??

The image you see was a fungus on a log my tween--oops! I mean my teen granddaughter and I found on a recent hike. She just made that transition this month and is very excited about it. She also made her first visit to us--and flew by herself--well...not completely by herself. There was a plane involved.

Anyhoo...We hiked up Blood Mountain, which is not as ominous as it sounds. About half way up we found this fungus. We stood there for a long time and took several photos. For her, it was really cool to look at. For me, there was the added bonus of resting included!

We will never know if someone took the time to cut the face out of the fungus, but it was certainly a bright spot on our hike and something we will remember--long after I have forgotten the ankle sprain I got going back down the mountain.

I guess the point is that we had a great time, got to know more about each other, and saw some really cool stuff. No phones or video games were involved. We just walked and talked and enjoyed what God gave us.

Don't forget to have those moments and make those memories with your kids and grandkids. The opportunities soon pass and you can't get them back.

Is Universal-Nationalized Health Care Best for Your Family?

I came across this video and open letter to President Obama concerning the future of health care in America. Currently, families are free to choose their providers and insurance provider. While some feel nationalized health care is more beneficial, because the government pays for it, there are downfalls to it which can be seen in the problems with the UK&Canada's health care programs. Recently private insurance providers also offered to reduce insurance rates for those who have chronic health conditions, making it easier for those people to get health care and afford it.

I'd much rather have a choice who I see, what company provides my insurance coverage based on the best rates and coverage. It seems if the government has control over these decisions we will be limited to the kind of care we prefer or need, such as in the case of Baby OT in the UK, who I posted about earlier this month and the recent high profile death of actress Natasha Richardson in Canada.

Here is (CPR) Chairman Rick Scott to President Obama – as the president convenes his health care reform summit. Scott urges Obama to reveal specific details about the health care plan he envisions, not just specifics on how much he intends to spend as he did last week — $634 billion. Scott: “Mr. President, Americans don’t want surprises. … Please tell us the specifics of your plan so that all Americans can make a judgment on it for themselves.” Scott notes that already the Obama administration and congressional Democrats have created an ominous sounding “Federal Coordinating Council” for health care that was buried in the recently enacted stimulus package, and for which there was no debate. Scott: “Many Americans are leery about allowing the government to have a more significant role in making private health care decisions that should only be made by a patient and their doctor.”

CPR Open Letter Ad WPv5

What are your thoughts? If nothing else give people the choice to have government health care vs. privatized health care, there is no reason to reduce quality of care for nationalized health care.

Tips and Information on ADHD to ODD Along With Tips to Deal With Children's Behavior

Parenting, advice and tips from Debra Wendler. Debra joined us to discuss how to help your child without losing your mind.

Listen to the show here, subscribe to the show, or simulcast the show on your site by embedding it on your page for easy access for your visitors.

Some of the tips shared on the show include:
-solving what you see is not the solution
-you need to find the cause of the behavior
-learn how your child perceive what they do

1. Parents can start by learning to respect children's attention span, an ADHD child for example has a six second attention span, according to Debra.
2. Parents need to talk in six second bits when giving instructions or requests (listen to the show for some examples)
3. Give warning times to let the child know it's almost time to end/start a task to help with transitions.
4. Give the child a visual schedule of what to expect next, developmentally appropriate (some teachers/parents might use PECS, also known as the Picture Exchange Communication System)
5. What's in it for the child...provide when then instruction, use positive affirmation/direction and replies such as nodding your head yes and saying you can...after..., or when....then....
6. Be sure to avoid the 15 red flag words as discussed on the show

For more information be sure to visit Debra's blog at http://adhdinparenting.com and for our listeners/readers Debra has provided the following resources:

A. sign up for my free report at www.adhdparentingtips.com and I'll send you my free report - how to motivate your child to listen plus you'll get a link to my three-part video series on how to prevent temper tantrums.
B. Also, something I started today just for your viewers. When you sign up for your report, you can get a free cd called how to help your child without Losing your Mind. It's an interview with Matt Bacak, who became an internet multi-millionaire because his mother used many of the same methods I explain in this CD.
C.Parents will likely see themselves in how I describe my real-life story and how I resolved it. I'm giving this CD away absolutely free. All I ask is that parents pay the low shipping and handling fee and they'll get the cd in the mail right away. PLUS they get four more super bonuses -it's all described there on the page they'll see after they sign up for the free report.

I'm not a doctor, I'm not a therapist. I'm just a mom who stumbled on a parenting style that works a LOT better than regular parents because that never works with kids like ours.

So listen to the show, share your thoughts and ask your questions here or share your experiences with your children.

Parents Are You Familiar With The Child Victims Act?

SAN DIEGO - MARCH 1: Alleged sexual abuse vici...Image by Getty Images via Daylife
I came across this great article by Marci Hamilton a Cardozo Law Professor, columnist of FindLaw.com and author of "Justice Denied: What America Must Do to Protect Its Children", which explains the Child Victims Act and what it will do to protect children from sexual predators.
As a Catholic, I'm disappointed to find that the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, along with the NY Civil Libierties Union (NYCLU), an organization like the ACLU, are opposed to this law which would expose child predators so that they are unable to prey upon our children again. What is different about this bill in relation to the current National Sex Offender Public Registry, which requires offenders to register in each state? The Child Victims Act will allow victims to report abuse and identify offenders five years beyond the current state statute of limitations laws and allows victims up to one year to file a court lawsuit in civil or criminal court, if the statute of limitations has expired.
Here are portions of that article, with highlights of the issue:
(On) March 18, the New York Assembly Rules Committee passed the Child Victims Act (Assembly Bill A02596/Senate Bill S02568), which will extend the criminal and civil statute of limitations for child sex abuse by five years. It will also open a one-year window of opportunity for child sex abuse victims to go to court even if their statute of limitations already had expired. The next stop is the full Assembly and then on to the Senate.
The Child Victims Act was first introduced by Assemblywoman Marge Markey, who has doggedly stood by the bill. For three years, she shepherded it through the Assembly, only to be blocked by Sen. Joseph Bruno, now under federal indictment. Now that Democrats are a majority in the Senate and many support this bill, there is real hope that victims have a shot at justice in New York this time around.

Survivors for Justice, comprised of Orthodox victims and their supporters; and Orthodox rabbis have joined them on the sidelines. While a handful of rabbis joined the Catholic Conference to lobby members last week, the powerful Orthodox Union has issued a public statement that it will not be opposing the Child Victims Act. This is the largest Orthodox Jewish group in the country and a highly respected one. In a statement, the Orthodox Union said that it "generally supports the expansion of the statute of limitations to enable victims of sexual abuse to pursue legal claims" and is "not opposed to this legislation." In addition, according to a news story by Hella Winston for The Jewish Week, Uri L'Tzedek, another Orthodox Jewish organization, organized outreach to legislators as did the Committee for Safeguarding Orthodox Children and Am Echad. In addition, a new student group at Cardozo -- Cardozo Advocates for Kids -- has set up a website that will monitor statute of limitations developments nationally, www.sol-reform.com; held a conference on abuse in religious communities; and organized a student phone-a-thon in favor of the bill.

Meanwhile, Survivors for Justice has combined with Voice of the Faithful and New York SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) to organize support for the bill. The groups individually and together have been to Albany, sent postcards to every member of New York's Assembly, and worked tirelessly to get the bill passed. These are survivors (and their families and friends) with their own issues and jobs and families, who have chosen to make this their single priority.

The Catholic League and the Catholic Conference (the lobbyists for the bishops in each state) have pushed two primary arguments: (1) They say the bill is not fair because it does not treat public and private entities precisely the same (and we are supposed to draw from this that it is "targeted" at the Catholic Church); and (2) they say that it will bankrupt New York dioceses. The first is mere obfuscation, and the second is intentionally misleading.

The bill pending in the Assembly will extend the criminal and civil statute of limitations for child sex abuse by five years. It will also open a one-year window of opportunity for child sex abuse victims to go to court even if their statute of limitations already had expired.

The NYCLU, like the ACLU, is an institution that makes the world a worse place for children. The NYCLU and ACLU rarely, if ever, take the position of the child, unless the issue is free speech in public schools. Whether the issue is the medical neglect of children in faith-healing homes, or the abuse of children in polygamous families, or the failure to educate children in Amish or Mennonite communities, they choose the religious parents to the detriment of the helpless children. It is a record that all those in the emerging civil rights movement for children have come to know well, and to be deeply disappointed by. The truth is that the NYCLU and ACLU seem incapable of factoring the rights of children into the mix. The ACLU might as well be called the Adult Civil Liberties Union. These organizations' knee-jerk reaction to the Child Victims Act is not only dangerous to children and families, but also based on outdated, inaccurate information about the reality of childhood sexual abuse.

The NYCLU are taking the side of the perpetrators, making the patently ridiculous argument that it is not "fair" for those who preyed on children to be named decades after their abuse occurred, because memories are faulty.

What are your thoughts? Should victims of abuse be able to identify their perpetrators five years after the incident in civil and criminal court despite the state statute of limitations? Or do you think 'victims' will be more likely to report false claims based on "faulty memory"? What I wonder is why the Child Victims Act is not something that has already been passed nationally? Help get the Child Victims Act passed in your state by clicking here.

Baby OT: parents may sue hospital over right-to-die battle

This is one of the saddest cases I have heard of this past week. I do not believe anyone has the right to decide who should live or die. This baby should have been left to live regardless of needing life support or not. The parents should sue in this case. It is my belief the socialized /nationalized health care in the UK is what lead to such a decision in this case. Since the government provides the cost of care, I think they took it upon themselves to make the decision to end this baby's life in order to save the government money.

The nine-month-old child, named only as Baby OT, died on Saturday after judges ruled doctors could withdraw life-sustaining treatment.

His parents, identified as Mr and Mrs T and thought to be a Muslim couple who came to Britain 10 years ago from Afghanistan, are said to be devastated by the death.

The Daily Mail said the couple were considering a complaint to the General Medical Council that doctors gave up treating their baby and had not ruled out suing the hospital involved.

Two Court of Appeal judges refused the parents permission to challenge a ruling by Mrs Justice Parker which gave the hospital treating the boy the right to stop medical treatment keeping him alive.

Doctors' representatives backed the right of the courts to make judgments in cases like that of Baby OT, who died just hours after judges ruled that a hospital could stop treating him.

A legal ruling was "the only way forward" in such distressing circumstances, where parents and medics could not agree on treatment for a child, said the British Medical Association (BMA).

Parents Be Aware: New Drug Abuse By Teens

Heaven's Pregnant Teens album coverImage via Wikipedia
I want to alert as many parents as possible about the latest threat to our teens. There are so many it is hard to keep track sometimes, but this is one I feel strongly about and hope parents will find a way to educate their children that abstinence is the only way they can protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies or  sexually transmitted diseases, emotional distress and heartache.

Some teens in rural America are now self-inducing abortions with chemicals intended to abort livestock, reports one of the nation's oldest and most influential pro-life organizations.

"What kind of world have we created for these girls that they're drinking poison and risking death in these modern-day back-alley abortions, rather than bear their child in love," asked Judie Brown, president of the American Life League.

The grisly situation was first exposed through the efforts of Anna Anderson, head of the Care Net Pregnancy Center in Green County, Wis., who reported the trend on the Stephenson County Right to Life website of Freeport, Ill.

The Cook Is a Home’s Nutrition Gatekeeper

Cooking with a Wok in ChinaImage via Wikipedia

I came across this article today and thought it was interesting. However, the choices for types of cook don't seem to fit for me. I'm not much of a cook, so sadly, I can't fit myself into any of these categories...can you?

My husband does the majority of cooking/bbq'ing and also helps with the shopping. I guess you can say our roles are slightly reversed, but that's because I am home all day with the kids and too tired to do any cooking in the evenings. My husband also helps take over the child care in the evenings so I can have some time to relax, blog and catch up with the latest headlines.

I would like to be a better cook, but haven't found an interest yet. I tried crock pot cooking for awhile, and found it fun and easy but then burnt out on the idea of trying new recipes or would forget what recipes we liked most.

Here is an excerpt of the article:
To learn more about gatekeepers, the Cornell researchers queried 770 family cooks about their personalities, cooking methods and favorite ingredients. Five distinct types emerged:

“Giving” cooks (22 percent) are enthusiastic about cooking and specialize in comfort food, particularly home-baked goodies.

“Methodical” cooks (18 percent) rely heavily on recipes, so their cooking is strongly influenced by the cookbook they use.

“Competitive” cooks (13 percent) think less about health and more on making the most impressive dish possible.

“Healthy” cooks (20 percent) often serve fish and use fresh ingredients, but taste isn’t the primary goal.

“Innovative” cooks (19 percent) like to experiment with different ingredients, cooking methods and cuisines, a process that tends to lead to more healthful cooking.

A quiz that can help you determine your cooking personality is at nytimes.com/well. Knowing your type is “going to tell you where your biases are,” Dr. Wansink said.

“A lot of giving cooks believe they are healthy cooks, but they are by far the least healthy,” he added. On the other hand, “if you like food, then the healthy cook is not necessarily the person you want to hang out with.”

“They will trade off a lot for health,” Dr. Wansink went on. “But innovative cooks have the best eye for freshness, yet there is still a big emphasis on taste. If you like great food and still want to eat reasonably healthy, the innovative cook is the person to hook up with.”

Home cooks also need to pay attention to the source of their recipes. Research from Cornell and New Mexico State University shows that even some cookbook recipes have fallen victim to the supersizing trends made popular by fast-food restaurants. They examined seven editions of “The Joy of Cooking,” published from 1936 to 2006. In 14 of 18 recipes studied, the calorie content had surged by an average of 928 calories, or 44 percent per recipe. Then there’s the “tablescape,” the placement and size of dishes, bowls, silverware and drinking glasses. In his book “Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think”(Bantam, 2006), Dr. Wansink notes that these seemingly innocuous items can increase consumption by more than 20 percent.

For example, beverages other than water should be served in tall, skinny glasses; studies show that even professional bartenders overpour when the glass is short and wide. We pile more food on larger plates and scoop up larger portions when the serving spoon is large. In one experiment, Cornell nutrition professors and graduate students were invited to an ice cream party, and attendees were given different-size bowls and scoops.

Even among these nutrition experts, those given larger bowls and scoops had 57 percent more ice cream.

Surveillance video gives missing boy's parents hope

Bullying is a terrible thing that many children face growing up. I am thankful I did not experience it first hand, but I did have a friend who went through it in elementary school. (see bullying) Thankfully she was able to put it behind her and never felt the need to act on it in such a way as this boy did.

The psychological harassment occasionally strayed into a punch or elbow in the head, Mr. Fortin said. The family told school officials dozens of times that their son was facing intolerable abuse, but the bullying carried on.

The head of the local school board said officials did everything they could to calm the bullying. Two students were put in special classes after David disappeared. They were not suspended.

“We don't believe any purpose would be served by penalizing them academically,” Éric Blackburn, head of the Lac-Saint-Jean school board, told reporters. “These youths will have to answer for their actions.”

Capt. Bouchard said it's too simple to conclude David ran away solely because of bullying. Investigators have not probed deeply into his motivation as they concentrate on finding him, but they say the abuse the boy faced is tolerated by thousands of school kids every day.

What? Gay Sex and Bible Bashing is Apparently A-OK for Kids?

I learned about this today while browsing headlines on twitter. I don't watch much tv, but have seen Family Guy before. My son has seen it before, although not much in awhile....but this article really shocks me as a parent to think the mainstream networks would play something like this during prime time, family hour?

Family Guy – talk about a misnomer. The animated Fox television series crossed sexual, moral and religious boundaries on Sunday evening when it aired content inappropriate for its young target audience.

The controversial material was not limited to one subject, or isolated in a single scene. Images of gay men kissing, a baby eating semen, physical abuse, sexual touching and a half naked male were just a few of the disturbing images viewers were treated to in the March 8 episode.

The Parents Television Council has issued a press release regarding the indecent content. Tim Winter, President of the PTC has alerted the Federal Communications Commission to the controversial content aired at 8:00pm CT, during the so-called family hour.

Then share your thoughts.

Parent Alert:Changing Minds and Saving Lives One at A Time

The issue of abortion is heartbreaking to me. I feel as if it is almost helpless in overturning Roe V Wade, but to think our new President is overturning stem cell research policies which allow the distruction of living embryos(babies) & intends to pass FOCA, which will undue all right to life laws across the country, including late term abortions sickens me.

I am trying to do what I can to educate others on this issue, one way I do this is spreading the word about sites/videos like this via my online social networks such as twitter and via my parenting blog.

Prayer is probably the best we can do,but I always feel like there is so much more that could be done.

This video is very powerful and heartbreaking, I hope it will change at least one persons mind against the "pro-choice" movement; changing minds and saving lives one at a time!

Discipline With Love in Mind: Parent-Child Turning Points-Series for Parents

I came across this great site today, it is actually an online church and resource for any parent or person seeking to live a Christian life, while raising their children with strong values, character and morals. They are offering this four part series (free) for parents teaching discipline techniques and discussions. Check it out. Today's topic was great and I am looking forward to hearing more in the coming weeks. See the schedule below for more info:

3/7/2009 - 3/29/2009
Whether you are a parent or the child of one - which means all of us - understanding the parenting dynamic as you go through the seasons of life is one of the most critical of life-skills to master. If you are a parent, you are probably overwhelmed with parenting information - but hunger for true parenting wisdom as your child grows and mature. You know that your parenting challenge changes as they age, but do you know how?

If you are a child, particularly high school and college, you are wanting freedom from your parents, as well as intimacy. Do you know how that best plays out? And for those past the parenting years, but perhaps reflecting back on your family of origin, understanding what did - and did not - go well can be a source of great insight and healing.

For these reasons and more, you won't want to miss a single installment of "Parent-Child Turning Points" as taught by senior pastor, James Emery White - himself a father of four - as he looks back on twenty-two years of parenting and joins it with the rich wisdom of the Bible on the parent-child dynamic.

  • When They Turn Two: The Time to Shape the Will Mar 7 & 8, 2009
  • When They Turn Eight: The Time to Deepen the Relationship Mar 14 & 15, 2009
  • When They Turn Twelve: The Time to Focus on Communication Mar 21 & 22, 2009
  • When They Turn Eighteen: The Time to Become a Friend Mar 28 & 29, 2009

Here is another fun video about parenting featured on the site by the Mecklenburg Community (Online) Church.Enjoy!
