A Memorial Day Message from LtCol Oliver North

I received this via email today and wanted to pass on the important message shared to all of my readers and passersby to share. Please remember to honor and remember our fallen soldiers and active duty military who fight and sacrifice to defend our country and preserve our Constitution, keeping America the land of the free and the brave!
-------Original Message-------

As we honor our Armed Forces this Memorial Day, please find below a special message from, LtCol Oliver L. North, USMC (Ret.). He has some important information to share with you. Thank you.
Newsmax.com
Dear Proud American,
Thank you to all those who have worn this country's uniform and have served in our Armed Forces. We especially pay tribute to those whose lives were lost in defense of this country.
Memorial Day, is a special time for all of us to remember that America enjoys freedom today because of the soldiers, sailors, airmen, Guardsmen and Marines who have sacrificed their lives for the defense of our nation.
In Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, I've seen these heroes make that final sacrifice for our country. It's never easy. What makes it more difficult is to know that this American's dying prayer is for a loved one back home.
Their last appeal is to us – their fellow countrymen – to care for the families they've left behind.
That is what we do here at Freedom Alliance – we care for the families they have left behind. Our Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund honors the bravery and dedication of our servicemen and women, who have sacrificed life or limb in defense of our country, by providing educational scholarships for their children.
One of our scholarship recipients is Andrea Padgett, who just graduated earlier this month from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Andrea's father, Chief Warrant Officer Elmer Padgett, flew helicopters for the United States Army.
Sadly, Andrea's father was killed in a helicopter crash just before her first birthday. Even though she barely knew him, his life is an inspiration to her today: "I have grown up aspiring to achieve the level of courage, bravery and dedication that my father achieved while serving in the United States Army. He has not only shaped my entire life and choices through his service, he has also touched many other people's lives. Because of his choice to follow his dream of becoming a pilot, I have gained the courage and inspiration to follow my own dream of being a veterinarian, even though people have told me of the challenges involved."
We cannot bring Andrea's father back to her, but we are deeply honored that the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund has helped make her father's dream of a college education for her, come true.
Providing scholarships to the children of our heroes is our way of honoring their service and sacrifice. Will you help us in this cause with a special Memorial Day contribution to the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund? Please GO HERE to make your most generous, tax-deductible gift to the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund, a "Living Memorial to America's Military Heroes."
Through the generosity of many patriotic Americans, the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund has awarded $2.5 million in scholarships to hundreds of young Americans all around this great country. However, the need for our Scholarship Fund is ever-increasing. More than 4,900 American servicemen and women have been killed during Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, leaving behind thousands of young children who deserve our help.
With your special Memorial Day gift to the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund, these children will not only attain a college education, but they'll know that their parents are heroes – not because of the way they died, but because of the way they lived. Please GO HERE to make your gift now.
I also invite you to join me in honoring our brave defenders of freedom this Memorial Day by supporting the Freedom Alliance Support Our Troops program. This year-round outreach honors members of our Armed Forces – those who have been wounded in combat and are recuperating at military hospitals throughout the United States – as well as those currently serving on the frontlines.
The Freedom Alliance Support Our Troops program regularly receives requests to help wounded troops who are recuperating in Wounded Warrior Transition Units and military hospitals all around the country.
Thanks to the generosity of many patriotic and generous Freedom Alliance supporters, we recently were able to help two combat-wounded veterans, Master Sergeant Dexter and Specialist Doug, by flying them from Fort Bragg in North Carolina out to Guide Dogs of the Desert in Palm Desert, California to meet and train with their new, seeing-eye dogs. MSG Dexter lost his sight during a demolition training accident while gearing up for deployment and SPC Doug lost his sight when he was hit by an IED during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
After returning home with their dogs, Freedom Alliance received this thank you from SPC Doug: "Just wanted to thank you for all your help in getting us, Dexter & me, out to Palm Desert to receive our guide dogs. It was a great and moving experience. Here is a photo of our class at the war dog memorial. My dog's name is Zihn. Thank you again!!"
Please GO HERE to make your most generous Memorial Day gift to the Freedom Alliance Support Our Troops program. Your support NOW will enable us to continue providing grants to our combat-wounded heroes, and also provide support to our troops on the frontlines.

Freedom Alliance continues to send care packages, which include thousands of cards and letters of appreciation, to those risking their lives on battlefields all over the world. Recently, at a Freedom Festival in Jackson, Tennessee, hundreds of patriotic Americans collected more than 3,000 pounds of goodies and much-requested items for Gifts from Home care packages that Freedom Alliance shipped to Iraq and Afghanistan, just in time for Memorial Day.
So, I come to you, with an urgent appeal to open your heart with your most generous contribution to the Freedom Alliance Support Our Troops program.
Having made 11 trips to Iraq and Afghanistan, I can tell you how much these Gifts from Home mean to these courageous men and women, who are so far away from home and their families.
This year, Freedom Alliance has hosted Troop Appreciation Dinners and other special events for service members in 10 different states. Many more Support Our Troops events are planned throughout the rest of this year to thank our troops for their service and sacrifice for our country and to give them an enjoyable time out with their friends and families.
Please GO HERE to make your most generous, tax-deductible and special Memorial Day gift to the Freedom Alliance Support Our Troops program.
Will you please join with me and Freedom Alliance to pay tribute to our front-line warriors and their families? May we count on you, as together we honor and thank them for the sacrifices they have made for our country and please keep them in your prayers.
Semper Fidelis,

LtCol Oliver L. North, USMC (Ret.)
Founder and Honorary Chairman
Freedom Alliance
P.S. Join me in celebrating Memorial Day by flying Old Glory and saying "Thank You" to our troops and their families.

Parental Rights: To Be Taken Away and Given to the UN?

I have been following this issue online for awhile and became alerted to this article on politico.com recently. Parents need to become more aware of the laws and powers the government is planning or hoping to impose on us and our kids.
If there were a recipe for creating a new conservative culture-wars issue, it might look something like this: Start with the United Nations, fold in the prospect of an expanded role for government in children’s lives, add some unfortunate court decisions, then toss in Barbara Boxer and Hillary Clinton.

And indeed, when House Republicans recently found themselves with all these ingredients at hand, Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) started pre-heating the oven.

(Thankfully)Hoekstra last week introduced a bill in the House to amend the U.S. Constitution to permanently “enshrine” in American society an inviolable set of parents’ rights. The bill had 70 co-sponsors, all Republicans, including Minority Whip Eric Cantor and Minority Leader John A. Boehner.

The bill, said Hoekstra, is intended to stem the “slow erosion” of parents’ rights and to circumvent the effects of a United Nations treaty he believes “clearly undermines parental rights in the United States.”

The treaty to which he refers is the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, a 20-year-old document signed by President Bill Clinton in 1995 but never ratified. The treaty sets international standards for government obligations to children in areas that range from protection from abuse and exploitation to ensuring a child’s right to free expression.

While a treaty that seeks to protect children may sound innocuous, its opponents, such as Michael Farris, the Christian conservative founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association, see in it a dystopian future in which “Parents would no longer be able to administer reasonable spankings to their children”; “A child’s ‘right to be heard’ would allow him (or her) to seek governmental review of every parental decision with which the child disagreed”; and “Children would have the ability to choose their own religion while parents would only have the authority to give their children advice about religion,” as he puts it on his website parentalrights.org.
If we as parents don't keep informed and follow up with what is going on in the legislature things will get passed into law behind our backs that we may not agree with regardless of political party. In my previous article, I mentioned about what happens when the government becomes involved in parental and family decisions what can happen is not always pretty. Children end up in homes where they are further 'at risk', abused, abandoned or worse left for dead. This is why it is so important for parents to get support either from friends and families, their neighbors, their church or other local services. The governments involvement in our personal lives and how we raise our children should be very limited, outside of us  permitting them into our homes.

Parents Are You Ready To Have Your Children Serve America?

I intended to post about this issue last month, but forgot it was in my drafts rather than publishing it live. This bill has since passed not only in the House on 3/24/2009 This bill (HR1388) has been passed in the House, but has also passed in the Senate.

The bill now goes (was also passed) on to be voted on in the Senate. Keep in mind that debate may be taking place on a companion bill (S 277) Serve America Act in the Senate, rather than on this particular bill. You can read and learn more about this bill below, now law, which has been signed into legislation by President Obama.

S 277 http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-277
HR1388 http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-1388

The Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, known as the GIVE Act, was passed yesterday by a 321-105 margin and now goes to the Senate. Since this information was available to me last month the bill has become a law under the name of "The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, recently renamed to honor the Massachusetts senator's sponsorship of the measure, will more than triple the number of positions in the AmeriCorps program, from 75,000 to 250,000, by 2017."

Under section 6104 of the bill, entitled Duties, in subsection B6, the legislation states that a commission will be set up to investigate, Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.

Section 120 of the bill also discusses the Youth Engagement Zone Program and states that service learning will be a mandatory part of the curriculum in all of the secondary schools served by the local educational agency.

The legislation, slated to cost $6 billion over five years, would create 175,000 new service opportunities under AmeriCorps, bringing the number of participants in the national volunteer program to 250,000. It would also create additional corps to expand the reach of volunteerism into new sectors, including a Clean Energy Corps, Education Corps, Healthy Futures Corps and Veterans Service Corps, and it expands the National Civilian Community Corps to focus on additional areas like disaster relief and energy conservation, reports Fox News.

The Senate is also considering a similar piece of legislation known as the Serve America Act, which also includes language about Youth Engagement Zones.

Fears about Obamas plans to create involuntary servitude were first stoked in July 2008, when Obama told a rally in Colorado Springs, We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives weve set. Weve got to have a civilian national security force that is just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded.

Despite denials that Obama plans to institute a mandatory program of national service, his original change.gov website stated that Americans would be required to complete 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. The text was only later changed to state that Americans would be encouraged to undertake such programs.

In addition, Obamas Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, publicly stated his intention to help create universal civil defense training in 2006.

The bills opponents — and there are only a few in Congress — say it could cram ideology down the throats of young volunteers, many of whom could be forced into service since the bill creates a Congressional Commission on Civic Service, reports Fox.

We contribute our time and money under no government coercion on a scale the rest of the world doesn't emulate and probably cant imagine, said Luke Sheahan, contributing editor for the Family Security Foundation. The idea that government should order its people to perform acts of charity is contrary to the idea of charity and it removes the responsibility for charity from the people to the government, destroying private initiative.

Lee Cary of the conservative American Thinker warns that Obamas agenda is to, tap into the already active volunteerism of millions of Americans and recruit them to become cogs in a gigantic government machine grinding out his social re-engineering agenda.

CFR luminary Gary Hart hit back at critics, claiming in a Huffington Post piece that, Resistance to expanded public service programs can be expected from the ideologically sclerotic, those who occupy the negative ground between government as the problem and government as our enemy.

The frightening prospect of Obamas mandatory government servitude is covered in-depth in Alex Jones new documentary blockbuster, The Obama Deception.

As parents it is important that we keep ourselves informed about these issues and get involved. Your child's civil rights and liberties could be at stake. Volunteerism should be done willingly, not under the disguise of compensation or benefits while acting as a 'volunteer lobbyist' for the government and their agenda.

For the fun of it, I thought I would get a sampling of some of the latest discussion on twitter regarding the Swine Flu (H1N1) discussion on Twitter. Below is a sample of what I found as of this posting:

As you can see there are many people concerned, others who think twitter is taking the issue to extremes and others who are sharing informative links and sometimes humorous responses.

What it boils down to is to use common sense; if you feel sick stay home, if you have a sudden fever, diarrhea, nausea, body aches, symptoms of the flu, stay home, and if symptoms worsen see your Dr. for medication w/in 24 hours. To prevent catching the virus make sure you wash hands regularly, use hand sanitizers, cough or sneeze into Kleenex and other common sense habits. Some of the links above will lead you to helpful resources, along with humorous resources to help keep you and your family on the healthy track.
