#parents #kids #tcot What To Do If Your Child Is Bullied-Our Children’s Right to Self-Defense

Police officer and parent George Mathias offers sound advice on how to prevent bullying. He also provides steps parents should take in defending their child's right to self-defense.

As adults we have a right to self-defense even if that defense includes use of physical force or lethal force with a weapon. Why not our children?

While I don't encourage physical fighting and of course am not saying kids should use or bring weapons to school, this is against the law, there are times when children  are in situations that they must fight back and must defend themselves before serious harm is done. If that means using a physical means of self defense, such as punching, pushing or kicking back then make sure you stand behind them, because if they don't feel you will support them then they will not trust you when they have a problem.

What is most important is that the bullying is reported and you follow up to prevent it from happening again, take notes and go above the teacher and principal, to the school board and police if you feel that your child's situation has not improved.

Via Patriotupdate-Editor’s note: Bullying has been a hot news topic as of late. With all of the focus on  bullying itself, little has been said as to what can and should be done to prepare our children for handling bullies and   bullying. We asked self-defense expert and weapons trainer George Matheis from Modern Combative Systems to give his perspective. His response to this politically-charged subject is what follows.
When we send our children off to school, we have a reasonable expectation that the adults entrusted to teach them will also protect them. Of course, we have all seen the threats by active shooters, but the topic of this article is dealing with bullies.
As a police officer and a parent, it has been my experience that the teachers and administrators know who the bad apples are in their school in much the same way that a police officer knows the criminals on his post. The good kids, like the majority of citizens, start off each day trying to do their best. It is a small percentage of people that prey on them.

Consider the fact that every time you read or hear a story about a violent act, the person committing those acts likely has at least one child. If you are the adult victim of a crime and the criminal is arrested, you will likely be amazed by their criminal record. The same is true if your child is the victim of a bully. The vast majority of the time the incident with your child is just part of an ongoing course of conduct.

Here we are going to focus on physical bullying, ranging from blocking someone’s way, to the threat of, and actual, physical harm. If your child is a victim of bullying, it will likely go something like this: They are in school when the incident takes place. Depending on the incident, a teacher sees it, or is told about it, and the well-known bully is told “not to do it again.” Your child comes home and tells you what happened. You call or go to the school and they assure you that they have already spoken to the student and have explained to him how serious they are about their no bullying policy, just like the police are about informing a criminal of how serious they are about enforcing laws. This may or not be the last time you hear the bully’s name, but if you ask around you will find out that other parents are familiar with him.

Many schools have adopted the policy that if a student is attacked and defends himself, he will also be suspended—no questions asked. Few things could be more against our God-given rights than the right to defend ourselves.

From what I have found, most serious bullying takes place from about 4th grade and up. Children should be taught about the danger of adult strangers from birth, but from about 10 years old or so they should be taught how to defend themselves against their peers.
No matter what a school’s policy is, they cannot take away your child’s right to self-defense. The seriousness of an incident is open to interpretation. My rule of thumb is that if your child was scared or intimidated, you must pursue action. First, go to your board of education’s website and print and educate yourself on their Bullying Policy. They all have one because it has become a buzzword in public education these days. Go to the school, see the principal, and find out what type of action they plan to take. If there is a school resource officer, have them attend the meeting also. If a crime has been committed, insist for the child to be charged with the crime. This is especially important if your child is suspended or punished for defending himself. You need to be able to prove that he was, in fact, defending himself. Be sure to take notes.

If you are not happy with the outcome of the meeting with the principal, go to the board of education and ensure that they are following their own protocol. As soon as you can, use your notes and summarize the meeting in an e-mail to the people with whom you met. If they receive it and don’t contest any points, we call that an “agreed upon statement of facts.” Any correspondence of this sort should be done through certified mail.

Further, educate your children about the reasonable use of force. A few examples that call for the use of force are: multiple attackers, unequal physical size, woman vs. man, and the use of a weapon. Primarily, the reason I bring this up is because of the rate of sexual harassment and sexual assaults in schools. Grabbing a girl’s breast or slapping her butt in schools is a crime, just as it is in the street. My 14 year-old daughter has been trained and educated that it is perfectly acceptable to drive a pen into the arm of any young man who touches her sexually.

Be sure your kids know that you will support them if they defend themselves, and to let you worry about the consequences. Just as the government wishes to destroy our right to self-defense against criminals—and as they continually fail to protect us against them—our schools are trying to do the same to our kids. Show them that you are unwilling to allow this to happen and that you will not only fight for your own rights but for those of your children as well.

#parents #prolife #prochoice #hcr #tcot Why wouldn't a pregnant mother take her Dr's advice&try bed rest??

While on twitter today I came across this controversial article the prochoice movement is in uproar about regarding a pregnant FL mother. She was 25 weeks pregnant and caring a high risk pregnancy, her doctor recommended bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy to try and prevent a miscarriage. Sadly, the mother didn't want to follow the doctor's recommendation and wanted to get a second opinion. However, the doctor and the courts found it was in her and the fetus best interest to place her on bed rest and admitted her to a hospital against her will.

While this isn't an abortion issue, it brings up the pro choice and pro life issue because while the pro choice movement fights for 'bodily autonomy' of the woman, the pro life movement fights to defend the rights of the unborn human being, the fetus.

This is a hard case to be on either side, but as a mother I don't understand why she was so unwilling to do anything possible to try and protect the life of her unborn child. She didn't have intentions to abort, so the child must have been 'wanted'. Why didn't the mother seek a support system either through family, friends or the community to help provide care for her other children while she was to remain on bed rest?? It isn't clear if she was married, but it sounds like she was a single mom of two.

According to the case, the mother also was a smoker and did not want to stop smoking, which by law, she is legally entitled to do. However, there have been cases of women who abuse alcohol or drugs while pregnant, and if their child dies or is born with fetal alcohol syndrome or some other drug addiction or abnormality caused by this abusive/negligent behavior, where the mother has been charged with child abuse or negligence and in some cases murder.

In addition, there have been cases where parents are charged with abuse or negligence when they do not provide proper medical care to their living child because of religious reasons or other beliefs that they don't believe in medical intervention.I completely understand and agree with these cases and find that the state and courts are obligated to find   against the parents when the child's welfare is concerned and at risk. There is no other way to prevent child abuse, negligence and the death of children unless the state, courts and DCYF [Department of Children, Youth and Families]intervene.

Unfortunately in the case of this mother,Samantha Burton, did not get to seek a second opinion, but it makes me wonder if she would have and if she was told by another doctor it was in her best interest and the unborn baby's best interest to go on bed rest if she would have done so. So on one side I disagree with the doctor blocking her ability to get a second opinion, but on the other side I think the doctor felt she was doing what was in the mother and baby's best interest to try and save the baby and continue the pregnancy. There is no guarantee a pregnancy will go to full-term, since miscarriage can occur spontaneously, but you would think any woman who wants a child and wants the best for her unborn child would do whatever she could in the best interest of the child.

Her refusal to trust her doctor's advice tells me she didn't trust her doctor for some reason and also that she possibly didn't want the child after finding there may be complications,so perhaps she sought an easy way out of doing what is best to carry the pregnancy full-term by her refusal for medical intervention. So if this was the case, the doctor and the courts ruling was in the best interest of the unborn child and the mother, even though the mother wanted to refuse treatment. Sadly, the baby did die in utero and the doctor's had to perform a c-section three days after she was put on bed rest only to find the baby was dead. What actually caused the miscarriage is not clear, but the stress of being ordered on bed rest could have contributed or it may have happened regardless. Since there is no way to blame the doctor or the state for the pregnancy ending in miscarriage, I wouldn't say she has legal grounds to sue for the child's death.  I feel they did what they felt was in the best interest of the mother and her unborn child.

However, because the mother refused bed rest and felt 'forced' by her doctor and the court order to be hospitalized, she appealed to the Florida Supreme Court, where they also found in favor of the unborn child and upheld the lower courts ruling. While this is great news for the unborn child to see that the court ruled in favor of attempting to save the life of the fetus, it does make one wonder where the limits of the court&  state are when it comes to a patient making medical decisions, such as seeking a second opinion.

I am fully for patients rights and having the ability to make all my own medical decisions, but I am also pro life and would have had no problem taking the advice of my doctor, someone I trust for medical advice. So again, it makes me wonder why the mother didn't trust her doctor's advice and why she didn't seek family, friends or community support to care for her other children while on bed rest?

The case didn't mention where her two other children stayed while she was admitted to the hospital on bed rest, but I suspect friends or family or the state stepped in and placed them in temporary custody. So if this assistance was available anyway, why didn't the mother just take her doctor's advice and avoid the whole situation of being 'forced' into bed rest in the best interest of her unborn child?? Did she sue after the fact to gain financially or did she sue because she truly felt her rights were violated??

 From Change.org:

With issues like the Stupak Amendment and Nevada's Personhood Initiative in the national spotlight, I am aware that a woman's right to choose whether or not to carry a fetus to full-term is under attack.

What I didn't realize, perhaps naively, is that her right to choose how to carry a fetus is also under fire. Last March, Florida resident Samantha Burton was in week 25 of her pregnancy when she paid a visit to her doctor. Burton was showing signs of potential miscarriage, so her physician ordered bed rest. Burton explained that, as a working mother of two toddlers, bed rest simply wasn't a viable option and then proceeded to ask for a second medical opinion. Seems reasonable, right?

From RHRealitycheck.org:
Yesterday in Tallahassee, the 1st District Court of Appeal heard arguments in a case involving a pregnant woman — Samantha Burton — confined to a hospital bed, against her will, after disagreeing with her doctor's recommendations for treating pregnancy complications. I joined Ms. Burton's lawyer as a "friend of the court" in arguing that the State of Florida had violated Ms. Burton's constitutional right to make decisions about medical care related to her pregnancy.
The ACLU first learned about this case after Ms. Burton's pro bono lawyer, David Abrams, called us for help as he pursued an appeal of the lower court's order confining Ms. Burton to hospital bed rest. Frankly, I wasn't surprised to hear that the State of Florida had stepped in to override the medical decision-making of a pregnant woman — unfortunately we have seen that before. What was even more stunning than in other cases was the unlimited breadth of the court order; the complete lack of any consideration of Ms. Burton's constitutional rights or health; and the fact that the hearing had gone forward with no legal or other advocate to represent Ms. Burton. After a brief telephone hearing, and no review of her medical records or consideration of a second medical opinion, the circuit court summarily ordered Ms. Burton to submit to any and all medical treatments and interventions — including eventually a C-section — that the hospital's medical staff deemed appropriate. To top it off, the court ordered her to remain confined on constant bed rest at the very hospital where the disagreement arose, and expressly prohibited her from switching to another hospital.
At yesterday's argument, Florida defended its request for these measures by insisting that it was a very narrow intervention, for a "short" time, designed to simply preserve the "status quo" until the court could determine the proper course of medical care for Ms. Burton's fetus.

Do you think the doctor and courts did the right thing or do you think they superseded Ms. Burton's constitutional rights?? Please share in the comments what you think.

#parents #prolife Survey:While ladies are busy focusing on their career, young men they work alongside are dreaming about becoming dads.

While the feminist movement has pushed women to become equal to men;it has also pushed more women away from their traditional roles of motherhood. After Roe V Wade passed in 1973, women found they could become equal to men by taking away their physical ability to give birth by terminating the pregnancy through abortion.

In result, the US has allowed over 50 million unborn babies to die from abortion in the last 38 years. Women's equality should not include shame or dislike for your womanhood ability to conceive. As a matter of fact, I had one 'pro-choice feminist' today on twitter tell me:

@JuliaMathewson: @littlebytesnews My right to self-defense means I can fight back if another person/organism attacks me - even if it's a fetus in my uterus!

As if the baby is attacking her like a rapist attacks a woman. These feminists are going to the extreme with their emotional analogies and rhetoric in order to defend the indefensible.

However, as females we are the only human gender who can conceive a child and give birth. Women should honor this gift and protect it with integrity and spare all life. Having children and becoming a mother doesn't make you less of a woman it makes you a stronger woman. As any mother can tell you having kids is a tough job, often tireless, demanding and with little appreciation. I especially commend and respect single moms who keep a job, food on the table and raise well-rounded kids.

I met one older woman recently who ended up in a divorce after having three boys. She said she was married at 18 and had her first child too young. Her marriage eventually dissolved after three children, three boys. She managed to keep her life in order, raise three successful sons on her own and did it all without the help of their father or family nearby. I was very fond and impressed with her ability to have done that. It takes a special woman to be a single mother and raise well-rounded and educated kids. Amazingly, her boys all grew up to have PhD's, with one earning a Master's in Education. He now works educating teachers, by providing the teacher curriculum and training the teachers each year for a large school district, where my oldest son attends .

Anyway, I thought this article was interesting regarding this recent survey which finds more men want children while women are still more focused on their careers, and fulfilling the woman's movement, rather than becoming mothers. As our society and economy weaken it makes me realize more and more it is because the family unit has deteriorated. More women are not getting married and having kids and if they are they are getting pregnant, they are disposing of them like garbage through abortion, or using contraceptives to prevent pregnancy.

Sadly men have little say when a woman 'chooses' abortion because the old mantra,'my body, my choice', is still dominant among today's 'feminists' as it was in the 60's. Thankfully, for society the next generation is becoming more pro-life and hopefully more pro-family,pro-marriage and pro-children. Statistics have shown that a society becomes extinct if the race doesn't maintain at least two children per average family,if not three.
Any less makes it impossible to provide the growth necessary to sustain the infrastructure, financial and other needs of Society, especially Social Security and Retirement funds, Stock & Bond prices, and the price levels of homes.

• 1950's there were 8 workers per retiree, today there are only 3 workers per retiree, too few to support Social Security and retirement funds, stock and bond prices, price levels of homes.

• 2.2 average children per family would be zero growth, so you have to have at least 3 children per family not to have negative growth.
So those lonely women and men out there, I hope you start not only finding yourselves and establishing careers, I hope you start having families to keep our species, society and economy alive for future generations.

Marketing manager Dan Gibson lists career, a house and marriage as his top life priorities. Photo / Brett Phibbs

Getting a pay rise or a compliment at work is more important to many young women than getting married or having children.
But while the ladies are busy focusing on their career, it would appear the young men they work alongside are dreaming about becoming dads.
A new Colmar Brunton survey of nearly 500 '20-somethings' has found priorities for young men and women seem to be challenging traditional stereotypes.
Females rated getting paid, getting a work compliment and getting a pay rise more highly on a scale of 1-7 than men did.
When asked to list a number of priorities for the next two to three years and for before they reach 35, they put "being recognised as a leader" or "expertise in their field" at the top of both categories.
Men listed having children as their top short-term priority while they wanted to buy a new car before they reached 35.
Colmar Brunton's youth insights director and leader of the study, Spencer Willis, said while young men were also interested in work, the statistics showed they were far more eager to get married and have children than their female counterparts.
Mr Willis said the reversing roles trend had been building for five to 10 years but the gap between the two genders was now bigger, prompting warnings that "the friction between the male desire for fatherhood and the female priorities could be challenging" in the future.
He even went as far as to question whether the reversing roles could be responsible for the "cougar syndrome".
"You've got a group of young women who are driven in their career - and have been bloody good at it and hugely successful. The next thing you know their classmates from university, these young males were pining for parenthood and settling down at 25-30 years of age, have achieved that and those guys are no longer available. Is there a correlation between that?"
Young men the Weekend Herald spoke to yesterday had differing opinions on the survey findings, with several saying there was no way they were thinking about kids yet.
But Politix marketing manager Dan Gibson, 24, said he wasn't so surprised by the findings.
"I'd love to have a kid now if I could afford it."
He said children, career recognition and buying a house in the next few years would all make his short-term list of priorities - although he added he wanted to get married before taking the step into fatherhood.

Read to your child with the new StoryTime app on your iPhone #tech #parents #kids

How do you feel about an iPhone&iPad app that allows you to read to your child virtually?? I don't think it is all that bad, especially if used like the makers intended for when the parent is out of town or has to work late. I think this could be useful for military families to help them bond with their children while sharing bedtime stories.Of course nothing can replace the physical bonding time you share with your child while you read to them in person, but this is one of the next best things in addition to using a webcam. As you can see in the video, the app allows the parent to read to the child by phone while the child views the book/story on the iPad and interacts with the images.

If you’re a conscious-stricken parent who occasionally misses your kid’s bedtime story because of long hours at the office, there is, finally, an app for that.

Digital design studio ustwo, in collaboration with Atomic Antelope, last week launched Nursery Rhymes, an app that lets parents read a bedtime story to their iPad-wielding children through an iPhone, whether they’re working late at the office or on the other side of the world on a business trip.

“Thousands” of people have already downloaded the app since it was launched last week, says ustwo confound Matt Mills, who is known among
the tech community in Shoreditch, London simply as “mills.”

The Nursery Rhymes app alone features beautifully-rendered images of
children’s rhymes based on hand-crafted paper images. But the real
attraction is its “StoryTime” technology, which lets parents read along
to each story on another iOS device (typically an iPhone).

The app’s demonstration video below gives a good overview of how the
app works, but it’s also sparked some debate about the idea of “virtual
parenting.” (Try not to feel even a little bad for the girl in the
video.)

“That is just depressing,” says one YouTube commenter called
towertwelve, while another, joespadaford, says it’s “sad that this is
how kids are getting tucked in at night these days.”

Of course, mills and his crew are not out to permanently replace the
physical presence of a parent at bedtime. “It is simply the next best
thing to a story if a parent is away on business,” he says. “The video
for me is not depressing, it’s almost as if the child is in heaven, the
safest place a person can ever be. We needed to evoke the deepest
feelings. We did that.”

The future of health care in America under Health Care Reform?? #prolife #tcot #euthanasia #hcr

Such a sweet looking little boy, about the same age as my oldest son. I can't imagine having to go through something like this. One day having a happy, healthy thriving six year old to waking up the next day&finding him unresponsive and having seizures. Scary the things that can happen to people without any warning.

Thankfully the high media attention to Baby Joseph may have helped play a role in the doctor's changing their opinion on Noah. At first they refused to give Noah his tracheotomy, which is considered standard procedure in cases like this. Yet when the parents went to discuss plans for a future tracheotomy a new doctor was assigned to his case and told them it would not be feasible.

Through the help of a lawyer, Noah's parents were able to finally convice the doctor to perform the surgery. The doctor and hospital were forced to go against their 'quality of life' policy and gave Noah the tracheotomy he needed. Since the surgery Noah is reported to be breathing on his own with the breathing tube in his throat. However, he is still comatose and it is not known whether he will 'awake' again, but his parents are hopeful and praying for a miracle.

I hope you will join me, his family and thousands of others and pray for Noah's full recovery soon.

Toronto hospital gives tracheotomy to child in case very similar to ‘baby Joseph’

TORONTO, Ontario, March 22, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In stark contrast to the treatment of dying baby Joseph Maraachli, a Toronto hospital last week granted a family’s wish by performing a tracheotomy on their six-year-old, who is in a similar state as baby Joseph.

Noah Facecchia had been unconscious and on a ventilator at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children since January 9th. However, his father Tony said today that with the support of his doctors, he has now been breathing on his own since 9:00 a.m. Monday, except for a break last evening.

Noah, who was a healthy, active, and intelligent six-year-old, who loved soccer, swimming, and karate, had laughed and joked with his parents, Tony and Sonia, and little sister before going to sleep happily on January 8th.

However, his father was shocked the next morning when he returned to find Noah non-responsive and in the midst of a seizure.  He hasn’t woken up since.

“I had no idea that my healthy boy would wake up one day and not be healthy anymore,” says Tony Facecchia.

Since January 9th, Noah has been experiencing generalized seizures lasting five to 30 minutes, with breaks of five to 10 minutes.  He has been diagnosed with idiopathic refractory epilepticus, but doctors have failed so far to find the origin of the seizures, and say he is unlikely to survive.

The hospital had agreed to perform the tracheotomy, which is a simple procedure involving a slit in the throat to allow a breathing tube to be inserted into the airway.  The surgery is recommended in cases of prolonged ventilation because it allows for suction of fluid out of the lungs, creates a safe and stable way to use a mechanical ventilator, and is more comfortable for the child.

But the parents were shocked earlier this month when they learned that a new doctor on the case was refusing the procedure.  He said they would remove Noah’s tube instead.

“They were pretty adamant about that all of a sudden,” said Tony.  “We were going to the meeting thinking we’re going to discuss a time for this tracheotomy to happen, and all of a sudden they pull a 360 and say ‘No, we’re not going to do it anymore.’”

They had also learned earlier that the doctors put a ‘do not resuscitate’ order (DNR) into Noah’s file without consulting them.[my emphasis]

Building off the momentum created by the case of Joseph Maraachli, whose Facebook page has grown to 15,000, Tony launched his own Facebook page calling for prayer.  So far, they’ve attracted over 2,000 supporters.  The Facecchias got the help of a lawyer, and continued to advocate for their son.

Noah’s supporters breathed a sigh of relief Friday morning when Tony announced that the doctors had changed their mind and performed the tracheotomy.  “I think they’re back in the game of seizure control,” he told LifeSiteNews.

“At the time, it felt like they had given up on him a little bit, a few weeks back.”
“[The doctor] basically said, ‘I’m not doing this for Noah.  I don’t think this is in his best interests.  I’m doing it for you, for the parents,’” said Tony.

The DNR remains, but it has now been clarified so that it only applies if Noah’s heart stops beating.  “If he’s deteriorated so much that his heart doesn’t work anymore, they won’t pump his chest,” Tony explained.  “I believe that’s reasonable, as long as they try everything they can for him not to get that way, and they assured us that they will.”

Exposing the hypocrisy, slander and lies of #prochoice on twitter #prolife #tcot

More Prochoice/proabort advocates trying to slander me on twitter today by insinuating in tweets that I said, I 'justified' the murder of a former abortionist Dr. Tiller. When in fact as you can see in the tweet below I did not say that his murder was justified and was pointing out the fact that he performed late term abortions, after the third trimester, on women without any medical reason;such as to save the life of the mother.

I sent @RealtinConnor the following tweet last night:

Then another prolife friend/follower, @tech1959, apparently retweeted my tweet and @RealtinConnor replied to him with this, in an attempt to condemn him&insinuate he also felt Dr Tiller's death was 'justified' since he retweeted [shared] my tweet, in which I did NOT say anything implying the murder of Dr Tiller was 'justified'.:

As everyone knows on twitter, a retweet[share] doesn't necessarily equal an endorsement or mean that you agree with the tweet and the content of a link in full or at all, but that you felt it was something worth sharing with others. However, prochoice/proabort advocate '@RealtinConnor' likes to slander people on twitter by sharing the link edited with his own words and then linking to my tweet with his bias comments:

He then continues to harass&debate @tech1959, for retweeting my link and asking him to denounce me.

UPDATE:Here is the rest of the debate that ensued between @tech1959 and @RealtinConnor after I shared the above tweet, which highlights the parts where Realtin Connor specifically says I said/tweeted Tiller's murder was justified:

So basically as you can see from the history of tweets, @RealtinConnor,or 'fake Jesus' I like to call him, insinuated I 'justified' the murder of abortionist Dr Tiller and then sensationalized it on twitter by using his own deceptive words linking to my tweet. He deceived others and made it look like I said what he claimed, when in fact it was false, causing more of his proabort clan to retweet his lie.

This is very vindictive and telling how low the prochoice/proabort advocates will go in order to defend the indefensible. They have no integrity, and play word games, or outright lie to try and get their point across while deceiving others. I guess you can't expect much from a group that says a fetus isn't a human being or say a fetus is a 'parasite' and 'the host' has every right to remove 'it'. It just goes to show how desperate they are and how little facts they really have. They will do and say anything to smear prolife advocates.

Here is a site that claims to expose the 'prolife hypocricy' on twitter;yet they conveniently&deceptively leave out the full story&the truth regarding the prolife conversation and stance:

The site 'prolife hypocrisy' in its attempt to ' expose hypocrisy' ends up repeating the lie and then denying what the article I shared states:

The reports also show that of the 192 late term abortions on healthy babies performed in 2008—98 percent on women from out of state--none were performed for a legitimate “medical emergency.”

Every single late-term abortion involved a temporary mental health diagnosis, made, of course, by Tiller, who is no one’s idea of a mental health expert.

Thus this is my response to the harassment, lies and slander that is perpetuating on twitter today against me as the proaborts/prochoice 'advocates' continue to retweet and repeat the lies of @RealtinConnor. I wonder when and if any of them will denounce these lies and deceptive practices?? Although, I highly doubt it, lies are what got Roe V Wade past in the first place!

Simple blood test to detect Down's syndrome cuts miscarriage risk #prolife #parents #health #tcot

I just hope the more modern our medicine and technology gets less people will use it for wrong. We have 3D&4D ultrasound abilities now yet the pro-choice/abort movement tries to block any ultrasound and heartbeat legislation to try and inform women they are caring a human being in them, not just a blob of cells.

However, many pro-choice advocates continue to try and block this modern technology from being used to defend the indefensible. Now we have modern ways of detecting Down's Syndrome and other illnesses, defects like spina-bifida. Yet some still choose abortion as an option even though advanced surgery is available to fix the spine or to prevent miscarriage, such as in Down's Syndrome cases. Some people are so concerned about having the 'perfect baby' they abort because they didn't want twins, triplets or a girl or boy via IVF. This is when modern medicine is used for wrong and abortion should never be a legal option.

Scientists have developed a simple blood test to check unborn children for Down's syndrome, which would save pregnant women from undergoing invasive examinations that risk losing their baby.

Researchers in Cyprus have identified the key DNA difference responsible for Down's syndrome, reports the Daily Express.

Infants with Down's syndrome, which is characterised by severe physical and mental impairments, have an extra copy of Chromosome 21.

As DNA can cross the placenta from the baby to the mother, the blood test looks for chemical differences and extra chromosomes-a telltale defect in unborn babies.

Philippos Patsalis, of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, "The method is simple and fast and easy to perform in every genetic diagnostic lab worldwide because it does not require expensive equipment, software or special infrastructure."

"Such a non-invasive approach will avoid the risk of miscarriages of normal pregnancies caused by current, more invasive pro-cedures," he added.

Their findings have been published the medical journal Nature Medicine. (ANI)

This is something I can see some #prochoice women doing;since babies are disposable or parasites #prolife #parents #kids #abuse

From Iowntheworld.com I learned about this insane abuse story. Unbelieveable the things people do to innocent and helpless kids. I'm thankful his sister spoke out and was letting him out of the 'cage' at night. How sick, it's too bad she didn't say something sooner. How this woman was able to adopt is beyond me, but I hope she never goes around children again. She reminds me of some 'prochoicers' on twitter who equate a fetus in the womb to a parasite or an alien.

Here’s a woman who wanted a child enough that she adopted him. Now police say she kept him in a dog cage at night for two weeks because he was acting out and soiling himself at night.
So why do liberals continue to spread the fallacy that a wanted child reduces child abuse; so therefore legalized abortion reduces child abuse?

An Old Saybrook woman is accused of making her son sleep in a locked dog crate because he was acting out and soiling his bed.
Police started investigating Kathlyn Anthony, 54, after the boy’s sister said at school that she was tired because she kept getting up at night to let her brother out of his “sleep locker.”

"(S)he started using the dog crate as a way of - and I don't want to say punishment - but that's where he slept at night," Sgt. Kevin Roche told the Day.

According to the warrant, the boy would have to take a cold shower when he misbehaved or urinated in his room. When he was worse, Anthony would put him in the cold basement to cry so that the neighbors would not hear, according to the warrant.

Anthony was arrested on Sunday, charged with risk of injury to a minor and released on $100,000 bond after an initial court appearance on Monday.

Anthony told police she had been seeking outside help for the boy's behavior. She also used home therapy methods like Lego builidng class, a family trip to Disney, kayaking, a "feelings" chart and various breathing and restorative exercises, according to the warrant.

Miracle Baby; born with foot in brain! #prolife #parents #kids #health

This is a few years back, but it just goes to show you miracles can happen. A parent may get a possible terminal diagnosis of their unborn baby;yet with modern medicine parents can now have doctors perform surgery in the womb. In this case the mother was far enough in her pregnancy they decided to induce her and deliver the baby early after finding a tumor in his brain, which turned out to be a foot! After surgery, their child is alive and well and thriving developmentally with little concern for future problems.

So next time you get a dire diagnosis or ultrasound and think there is no hope and that the baby is better off aborted to avoid suffering, think of this case and always err on the side of life. Abortion is a permanent solution to a temporary situation!

In addition, not all ultrasounds and amnio tests are 100% accurate. I chose not to get the amnio tests with my sons, even though there was a small risk of them getting spina-bifida since my younger sister has it, but I didn't want to take the risk of having the aspiration cause an infection and threaten my son's life.

UK:They left my baby to die in my arms #hcr #tcot #prolife #parents

This is horrible after sharing some of the positive of modern medical advances, where induced hypothermia in newborns and premature babies can save lives, then there is this story from the UK which shows how rationing and cost effectiveness decides who lives or dies based on the quality of life the baby might have who is born prematurely. The other cases did not specify what the gestational age of the babies were, however both were givein a chance to live when treated with induced hypothermia. Why not give a 22 week old an equal chance at life that a 24 week old gets?? A couple weeks is not a justified reason to decide who lives and dies when we have advanced medicine and techonology to assist their breathing and keep them alive. Also why wasn't the mother given anything to try and prevent premature delivery??

Hospital only intervene with babies born after 24 weeks

Holding her newborn son Tom for the first time, Tracy Godwin marveled at his eyelashes, and counted every precious finger and toe.

After the drama of his arrival at just 22 weeks, she knew she had a little fighter in her arms.

But at a mere one pound, and battling to breathe, he would need all the help he could get. That help never came.

Grief-stricken: Tracy Godwin whose baby boy Tom was 'left to die' in her arms after being born at 22 weeks because of a hospital policy not to resuscitate

Not forgotten: Tom was born on March 6 last year and survived for 46minutes

Not forgotten: Tom was born on March 6 last year and survived for 46minutes

Forty-six minutes later, and despite her desperate pleas to midwives for assistance, Miss Godwin’s son died as she held him.

She has since been told that the hospital has a policy not to resuscitate babies born earlier than 24 weeks into pregnancy.

Yesterday Miss Godwin, who visits her little boy’s grave every day, told how she is haunted by fears she and her partner didn’t do enough to help their baby when the medics around her refused.

‘They put him in my arms and he cried and was wriggling around. I could feel him breathing and see his eyelashes and fingers and toes,’ she said.

‘But I kept thinking, “Where’s the incubator?” We were begging the midwives to do something to help him but no one was saying anything. He was not stillborn, he was trying to live.

‘If they had tried for an hour and said they couldn’t do anything more for him or he was severely brain damaged, that would have been different, but he wasn’t given a chance.’

Miss Godwin, 31, had been due to give birth to her first child on July 8 last year. She and her partner of two years were looking forward to becoming a family.

All went well until March 4 when she developed stomach pain and went to Southend Hospital in Essex. There, she was distraught to be told she was already in labour.

Put into a private room, she spent the next day in bed and was told by a doctor it might be possible to use a cervical stitch to prolong the pregnancy.

THE RESUSCITATION RULES

Although the NHS offers guidance on when to resuscitate premature babies, health trusts can decide individually whether or not to follow it.

Under the guidelines, doctors are advised not to try to save those born under 22 weeks as they are too underdeveloped.

Between 22 and 23 weeks it is not thought to be in the child’s best interests but can be done at the parents’ request after discussion of the likely outcomes.

At 23-25 weeks babies are routinely resucitated. Even with expert round-the-clock care, only 1 per cent of 23-weekers survive without disability.

DON'T RESUSCITATE, SAYS LEADING DOCTOR

While Southend Hospital chooses not to treat babies born before 24 weeks it is up to individual NHS trusts to decide their own policy on this contentious issue.

Recently a leading NHS official said babies born after just 23 weeks or earlier should be left to die.

Dr Daphne Austin, who advises local health trusts how to spend their budgets, said doctors were ‘doing more harm than good by resuscitating 23-weekers’ and that treatments have ‘very marginal benefit’.

She added only one in 100 grows up without some form of disability. The most common include blindness, deafness and cerebral palsy.

The NHS spends around £10million a year resuscitating babies born this early and keeping them alive on incubators and ventilators.

But in the early hours of March 6 – 22 weeks and two days into her pregnancy – she was in terrible pain and given the painkiller pethedine. Shortly afterwards she was aware of the midwife breaking her waters. She gave birth an hour later.

‘Because of the drug I wasn’t myself and I keep thinking if I hadn’t taken it and withstood the pain, maybe I would have had more fight in me to demand a doctor,’ she said.

‘We never saw one. It was a disgrace. I just kept crying and crying.

‘My partner was shouting at the midwives to help us but they just left us with Tom. We felt so alone, no one was helping us. I don’t know when, but I was suddenly aware Tom had gone.’

His tiny body was blessed by a priest and the couple went home later that day.

It was only four weeks later when they called a meeting with a consultant that Miss Godwin was given the news that resuscitating her baby was against hospital policy.

‘I just couldn’t believe it,’ she said. ‘I had all these questions about what had happened and why, and was just told: “I don’t know, it’s our policy.”

‘When you are pregnant you do not check what your hospital’s policy is on premature babies. To think he could have had a chance if he was born in a different hospital is just heartbreaking. You just assume the doctors will do everything they can to help you live.’

4 yro boy learns of his moms miscarriage from his sisters angel #prolife #parents #Christian

This is an amazing story of a life after death experience. I know many who don't believe will say the boy made it up,but he is not the first to have this sort of experience, there have been others who were non-believers who became believers after near death experiences.

Ice babies...babies revived after bodies chilled for several days! #prolife #parents

I wonder why the Deaver's in Nebraska weren't offered this as a potential way to treat their daughter after her birth? Their daughter was diagnosed with a congenital defect which doctors predicted would leave her to die shortly after birth or severely disabled if she lived. However, the mother is quoted as saying, "What Deaver saw was perfection: A tiny but beautiful child. Ten toes. Ten fingers. Long eyelashes."

The parents tried to get an abortion following this diagnosis, but due to a new Nebraska fetal pain law that restricts abortions after 20 weeks they were unable to do so without going out of state. This caused the parents to feel helpless because they felt they had no choice but to watch their baby die after her birth. Of course the prochoice advocates became outraged because the parents were 'forced to suffer' and watch their baby die rather than abort the baby and not have to deal with the emotions of saying goodbye or accepting the reality that they were granted at least 15 minutes of time to hold, love and kiss their baby goodbye.

If it was me I would rather have the option to hold, love, kiss and pray over my baby or try any other medical procedure available to try and save my baby's life, like this medical procedure, induced hypothermia, which prevents brain damage and allows the child to survive by bringing down the bodies temperature to 33-37 degrees Celsius. Perhaps this would not have worked with the Deaver's baby, but why wasn't something at least tried?? They didn't get a second opinion and just let their baby die.

Whereas the doctors and parents in the following stories took actions to save their children's lives.

A baby girl who didn't breathe for 17 minutes after birth was miraculously saved when doctors put her in a 'fridge' for three days.

Sophie Fleet suffered complications at birth and swallowed fluids which caused a blockage in her airways and starved her brain of oxygen.

Doctors decided to lower Sophie's temperature from its normal 37C to 33.5C for three days in a bid to stop her brain swelling and causing brain damage.

Happy family: Cain Fleet and Natasha Hall with baby Sophie who is flourishing at four weeks old

Temperatures this low bring on hypothermia but in controlled conditions it reduces pressure on the brain, allowing it to recover from trauma.

Sophie had to wear a special 'fridge' suit, which was pumped with water to keep her body cool.

Her parents couldn't hold her for six days and had to wait for scans to show the extent of any brain damage.

They said the first few days of her life - at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Hants - were a nightmare.

Father Cain Fleet, 35, from nearby Gosport, said: 'It was really distressing. Sophie wasn't breathing to begin with and so her brain started to swell.

'They whisked her away when she was born and then someone told us that they were cooling her body. We'd never heard of the treatment before.

'Hypothermia is quite dangerous. We were amazed they could use it in a controlled manner to heal. It's incredible.

'The doctors had to work on her for seven hours before we were allowed to see her and it was a further six days before we could hold her.

'Once they had her stable, the specialist explained to us what they had done so we didn't get too panicked by all the machines monitoring her and the tubes going into her.

'They explained that they had to bring her temperature down to 33.5 degrees and put her into induced hypothermia for 72 hrs to prevent further brain swelling and damage.

'This period was the most traumatic period we have ever experienced. I have never felt a baby so cold.'

Sophie was placed in a special 'fridge' suit that cooled her body temperature to just 33.5C

Sophie was placed in a special 'fridge' suit that cooled her body temperature to just 33.5C

Mother Natasha Hall, 26, said: 'When Sophie was born, I didn't know what was going on. It was obvious something was wrong but we didn't know what.

'We were numb for about three days and then we had to wait to find out how bad any brain damage was.

'The first time we touched her, she was so cold.

'It was so strange because babies are supposed to be warm. It made you want to put a blanket over her to warm her up.'

Sophie's body was later warmed to normal temperature again over 12 hours.
She then had tests done which showed she had suffered mild brain damage.

But her parents know it could have been a lot worse and are grateful the hospital had the life-saving equipment, which is not available everywhere.

Mr Fleet, a builder, said: 'Had she not had this treatment, the brain damage could have been severe or it could have been fatal.

'We're so grateful that our local hospital has this equipment.'

Miss Hall, a special needs teaching assistant, added: 'The hospital was fantastic. If it wasn't for them and the technology, she would not have pulled through.'

Huw Jones, a consultant neonatologist at the hospital, said: 'Until about two years ago all you could do was to support the baby.

'They would be in intensive care, but there was not much you could do to protect their brain.

'This cooling treatment helps slow everything down and helps stop brain damage.

'Research and trials have shown it works and this is the optimum temperature to reduce that brain damage risk.

'The suit the baby wears constantly monitors the temperature and the machine will pump cooler water round the suit if the baby warms up, or warmer water if the baby gets too cold.

'The process is something we've seen work well and we've had some good success stories with babies pulling through and being better than we would have expected.'

Sophie was born on February 11, weighing 7lbs 11oz. She was able to go home with her parents nine days later.

Doctors say only time will tell how the brain damage she suffered is going to affect her.

But Miss Hall said: 'So far she's doing everything a baby should be doin

Source: Dailmail.co.uk

Here's another recent story from the UK of a similar case where the baby was kept cool to prevent brain damage as well.

A baby born on the brink of death is on the mend after her body was cooled to normally hypothermic levels for three days to prevent her suffering brain damage.

Rachel Claxton's placenta ruptured during labour causing baby Ella to effectively almost bleed to death.

Doctors at Peterborough District Hospital worked for 25 minutes to revive Ella before they detected a heartbeat.

But they feared she could have been left with brain damage after being starved of oxygen for so long.

Ms Claxton and her partner Jason Anderson were told the newborn baby would need to be transferred to Cambridge to undergo a ground-breaking freezing treatment.

Ella Anderson

Doctors tried to revive Ella for 25 minutes (Hotspot Media)

Ella's body temperature was lowered at Addenbrooke's Hospital from its normal 37C to 33.5C - low enough normally to bring on hypothermia.

"I laid my hand on her head and she was ice-cold to the touch," Mr Anderson told The Metro.

The procedure, which was inspired by trapped climbers' ability to survive freezing conditions, reduces the pressure on the brain, allowing it to recover from trauma.

After three days, Ella's temperature was gradually returned to normal and in eight days she was allowed to go home.

Ella Anderson and mother Rachel Claxton

Nine months on, Ella's brain function is normal (Hotspot Media)

Nine months on, the baby is still receiving physiotherapy but experts say her brain function is normal.

"So far, she's gone from strength to strength," Ms Claxton told the paper.

Her mother is now campaigning for the technology, which is used by a number of specialist clinics across the country, to be more widely available on the NHS.

#prolife #parents #abuse Indianapolis:Mother charged with murder and infanticide

Mother: Bei Bei Shuai, from Indianapolis, has been charged with murder and infanticide after drinking rat poison in the final week of her pregnancy

This is another sad and disgusting story of child abuse, but in this case the mother is charged with infanticide after taking rat poison in a suicide attempt after her boyfriend left her. Women should never put their life or another life at risk simply because they are distraught because their boyfriend or husband wants to leave them, had an affair or abuses her physically or mentally.

Women need to empower themselves and leave these abusive and betraying relationships and respect themselves and their life better.  Mother's who find themselves in abusive relationships or abandoned by a 'beloved' partner need to love themselves more. You can't love anyone else until you love and respect yourself and those around you that you claim to love.

This woman should have seen a counselor, a friend or reached out to someone before attempting suicide. Now she must pay the price for her actions, as suicide is a selfish act and against the law. While her suicide attempt failed, she negligently took the life of an innocent human being in the process and must be charged for the murder of her baby, who was delivered early to save it,but later died due to the chemicals in the baby's system. If only abortion laws were treated the same way. What's the difference between having a licensed doctor prescribe RU-486 or someone taking rat poison, either way the baby ends up dead, yet the government continues to allow women to hire someone to take the life of their baby. Suicide cases like this and feticide laws, that protect the unborn under the Unborn Protection Act against acts of violence, show that the human fetus deserve equal protection and a right to life, yet abortion is still legal in this country. Why??

Bei Bei Shuai, from Indianapolis, has been charged with murder and infanticide after drinking rat poison in the final week of her pregnancy

Bei Bei Shuai, 34, gave birth to a baby girl called Angel days after taking a lethal dose of the poison.

But despite efforts by doctors to save her life she died three days later from bleeding in her brain.

Shuai later told police she had taken the rat poison on December 23 to try and kill herself after her boyfriend left her.

The bizarre suicide attempt was discovered by one of her friends who found her slumped in a car outside her home.

Shuai said she had taken rat poison and was rushed to the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Her daughter was delivered by caesarean section on New Year's Eve 2010 and immediately placed on life support.

Police launched an investigation after hospital authorities said the baby girl had died from complications caused by chemical in her system.

When investigator's searched Shuai's home they found an open packet of rat poison.

#prolife #tcot #news #parents Japan's radioactivity could enter food chain; children, pregnant women most at risk

I know there is a lot of hype and misinformation out right now on the nuclear threat going on in Japan right now, as many have a political/environmental agenda. However, these are things to consider in the future to protect yourself from the possibility of a nuclear disaster in the US. Experts advice having the potassium iodine tablets on hand prior to a disaster to reduce risk, to stay indoors and as far away from the site of the leak as possible. In addition, tuna and other deep water fish have been recommended as having healthy supplies of iodine. However, if it gets into our food supply in the way described below, how do we save ourselves?? What will you do??

"The explosions could expose the population to longer-term radiation, which can raise the risk of cancer. These are thyroid cancer, bone cancer and leukemia. Children and fetuses are especially vulnerable," said Lam Ching-wan, chemical pathologist at the University of Hong Kong.

"For some individuals even a small amount of radiation can raise the risk of cancer. The higher the radiation, the higher the risk of cancer," said Lam, who is also a member on the American Board of Toxicologists.

Radioactive material is carried by minute moisture droplets in the air. It can then be directly inhaled into the lungs, get washed down by rain into the sea and onto soil, and eventually contaminate crops, marine life and drinking water.

Cow milk was also especially vulnerable, experts said, if cows graze on grass exposed to radiation.

Lee Tin-lap, toxicologist and associate professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong's School of Medical Sciences, said waters around Japan must be measured for radioactivity.

"No one is measuring the levels of radiation in the sea," Lee told Reuters.

"Steam that is released into the air will eventually get back into the water and sea life will be affected ... once there is rain, drinking water will also be contaminated."

The World Health Organization said on Tuesday Japan was taking the correct measures to protect its population from radioactivity, including evacuations and stocking up on potassium iodide, an antidote to radiation.

CHILDREN AT RISK

Radiation is dangerous because it can cause changes or mutations in DNA, which may then go on to cause cancer. While the human body can repair DNA changes or damage, a person is only safe if the repair process happens faster than the time it takes for the damaged or mutated DNA material to replicate.

Most experts agree that growing children and fetuses are most at risk because their cells divide at a faster rate than adults.

They also consume more cow milk than adults, putting them at further risk, said a Japanese scientist who treated victims of the atom bomb explosion in Hiroshima.

"Cows are like vacuum cleaners, picking up radioactive iodine that lands over a wide area of pasture, and then those particles very easily are concentrated and pass into the milk," said the expert, who declined to be identified.

"This was what happened in Chernobyl, and unfortunately, information about the risk had not been supplied to parents."

New hope for preventing miscarriage&cervical weakenss #parents #prolife

It's always great to hear new medical procedures are available to prevent miscarriages. Nobody knows what exactly causes them but many are found to be caused by a weak cervix, leading to an infection in the fetus or sticky blood, which can be due to a lack of folic acid. In addition the risk of miscarriage increases in women who have had previous abortions. Therefore if you plan to conceive later in life you might want to take this into consideration before aborting your first and potentially only child. This medical procedure has been 99% successful in strengthening the cervix through an abdominal incision before pregnancy to help close the cervix enough to conceive. The surgeon ties a nylon loop around the upper cervix and ties it with a knot. The nylon is not absorbed by the body and therefore stays in place for future pregnancies.  However, the mother must be willing to have a c-section upon delivery since the cervix will be 'closed' for delivery.

Success: Fiona Stonehouse with her daughter Summer Rose

Every year in the UK, around 20 per cent of pregnancies end in miscarriage and stillbirth — a tragic issue that was brought into the spotlight recently when Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden lost her second unborn baby.

Fiona Stonehouse, 36, an unemployment consultant from Liverpool, had suffered two miscarriages.

She then underwent a procedure that saved her next child.

THE PATIENT

Rushing to get ready for work one morning, I kept feeling I needed the loo. I went to the bathroom and suddenly there was blood everywhere. I was 20 weeks pregnant and knew it was the baby.

I screamed for my partner, Paul, who took one look at me and called for an ambulance.

Once we arrived at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, the labour pains started, so they transferred me to a delivery suite and midwives gave me painkillers.

We just couldn’t believe it — the day before, a scan had showed the baby was well and healthy.

The baby, who we called Melody Grace, was born with a pulse, but within 20 minutes she passed away.

I held her for a while, feeling absolutely devastated, and left hospital that afternoon with only photographs of my lovely baby.

I wondered if it was something I’d done. Fourteen years previously, my daughter Imogen was born healthy, though I went into labour eight weeks early. That time, the doctors managed to stop the labour with drugs until I was full term.

When I went back to hospital after the miscarriage, the consultant said I might have cervical weakness. This means the cervix — the neck of the womb — starts to open before the baby is due.

So, when I got pregnant again six months later, doctors placed a stitch in the cervix to prevent it dilating too early. This time they kept a close eye on me.

At 17 weeks, a scan showed the cervix was ‘funnelling’ — opening and closing so it formed an hourglass shape — which the doctors said could allow in bacteria, putting the baby at risk of infection. I was told to rest.

At 20 weeks, my waters broke at home. The stitch had failed to work. At hospital, the doctors had to take it out so I could give birth to baby Paul Joseph, who was born without a pulse.

After the second miscarriage, Paul and I were in despair and wondered if I’d ever have another healthy baby.

Then my doctor told me about a procedure where surgeons put a strong nylon loop around the  top of the cervix and secure it with a knot.

It is placed much higher up the cervix than the stitch — just below the womb. The operation would be done before I got pregnant (the cervix is left open enough so you can conceive).

Three months later, I met Dr Roy Farquharson at Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

He warned that it was a far more invasive operation than having the stitch (that was done via the cervix, while this procedure meant an incision through my abdomen).

Also, the baby would have to be delivered by Caesarean because the cervix would be closed. However, the new operation had a 90 per cent success rate, compared with 75 per cent for the stitch.

While I was still worried, I knew it was my best chance of having the baby we longed for.

So in October 2008, I had  the operation under general anaesthetic and woke with a 7cm wound — I was on a pain relief drip for two days and left hospital five days later.

We kept praying there’d be a prize at the end. By January 2010, I was pregnant again. This time  I had antibiotic pessaries and creams to reduce any chance  of infection.

Around the time of the 20-week scan, I started having Braxton Hicks or ‘fake’ contractions, which is a sign the body is getting ready for labour, so I went in to hospital for monitoring for five days.

I was terrified I’d go into early labour again, but the contractions simply faded away.

The doctors planned a Caesarean for five weeks before my due date. I spent the final week resting in hospital and on September 8 the doctors delivered Summer Rose.

It was magical — Paul and I spent some precious time with her before the doctors took her to a special care baby unit for a week. When she was nine days old, I took her home.

Since I’ve still got my super-strength cervix in place, if we want another baby I needn’t face all that heartbreak again.

THE SURGEON

Dr Roy Farquharson is consultant gynaecologist at Liverpool Women’s Hospital. He says:

Around 20 per cent of all pregnancies end in miscarriage — recurrent miscarriage, when it happens twice or more, affects around one in 100 women.

While it’s not always clear what has triggered a miscarriage, it can occur if the woman develops sticky blood — this blocks small blood vessels in the placenta.

We can treat this with blood-thinning injections, mini aspirin and the vitamin folic acid.

It can also be caused by the growth of bacteria in the vagina.

Another possible cause is cervical weakness. Here, the womb starts to open or funnel, and the rest of the cervix then opens, too, so labour begins early. Even women who’ve previously had healthy pregnancies can develop this condition — we don’t know why.

Putting a stitch in the cervix through the vagina can help prevent it opening early. But  we can also offer transabdominal cerclage, which strengthens the cervix at the point where it starts to open.

This operation carries risks, including infection, bleeding, and damage to the bladder and bowel — but these are reduced if we do it before pregnancy.

The operation takes 90 minutes under general anaesthetic. First, I make a 7cm incision along the bikini line. Then I pass a needle threaded with strong nylon through the incision and right round the cervix at the point where it joins the womb and pull it tight.

I secure it with a surgical knot and close the incision with stitches. The patient usually leaves hospital after four or  five days. She can start trying to get pregnant once she’s had her next period.

The body will not absorb the nylon thread and it should last for ever, so the woman can have more full-term pregnancies if she wants. This is a wonderful operation that offers hope to women when all else has failed.

The operation costs £6,000 privately and a similar cost to the NHS.
