Keep your $$, but be careful not to rabidly attack Komen for the Cure-a remedy is coming!! #prolife #prochoice #tcot
OK, after the Susan G Komen foundation initially decided to defund Planned Parenthood this past week, today they have decided to state that they are not ending funding. The prochoice and prolife movement have been on an emotional rollercoaster this week as a result. The anger from the proabortion movement created a social media hatefest and national media uproar of attacks from the prochoice movement. The proaborts vowed to donate to Planned Parenthood, which raised over $40K in one day by private donors, and they threatened to boycott products affiliated with Komen. In response, prolife advocates began donating to Komen and started advocating in their favor for finally ending their association with Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the United States. I, along with other prolife adovocates were excited about the news and thankful Komen had finally come to their senses and wanted to make sure their grants go directly to mammogram providers and cancer research. As Komen admitted,Planned Parenthood doesn't provide mammograms, biopsies and research for cancer patients, therefore Komen finally decided to end funding. In addition, Planned Parenthood is under federal investigation by Congress for medicare fraud, investigation for covering up statutory rape&sex traffickers by providing abortions and services to underage patients without reporting it to authorities until pressured by these undercover tapes. All of this was documented and uncovered last year by the prolife advocacy group Live Action, founded by Lila Rose.
However, after reading over the recent release from the Komen foundation and the commentary of Jill Stanek and others at Decoding Komen’s supposed cave - Jill StanekI am inclined to believe the prolife movement be cautious in attacking Komen and to wait and see what happens. As of yesterday Komen did admit they had grants that weren't ending with Planned Parenthood until after 2013, so this restatement today is not new. However, after this time Komen's new grant making decisions will be based on the outcome of the federal&state investigation of Planned Parenthood if found criminal and grants will also be based on their decision to begin providing grants solely to mammogram providers. Therefore, since Planned Parenthood doesn't provide mammograms, but solely referrals, once the current grants end they will not qualify under the new funding requirements regardless of the outcome of the federal&state investigations.
Therefore, things may not be all that bad for the prolife movement in the end. If the interpretation of Komen's release is accurate, funding for Planned Parenthood will end because as Komen admitted Planned Parenthood does NOT provide mammograms and Komen's intent is to directly fund providers who provide mammograms and research. This would definitely disqualify Planned Parenthood from future funding and allows Komen to focus directly on providing cancer prevention and research funding without being affiliated with organizations like Planned Parenthood, whose primary function is providing abortions, breast exams and birth control, which is not fool-proof and guarantees future abortion clients.
So, as Jill Stanek suggests, let's hold out criticism and see what happens after the current grants run out in 2013 and the federal investigation is completed. I would also suggest NOT donating to Komen until such time to be sure they are going to strictly fund mammogram providers and not organizations like Planned Parenthood who don't.
