Updated:Kindergarten Killers--Another Mass Murder;Two Crimes

Yesterday in China, a deranged man with a knife stabbed 22 kindergarten children.
Today in the US, we were rocked&shocked by another act of violence and mass murder where a 20yro, Adam Lanza, senselessly killed 20 young kindergarten students, 6 adults, his mother and then himself this morning in Newton, Connecticut.

Twenty-two primary school children were wounded in a knife attack Friday in central China, authorities said.
Initial assessments suggest the man is mentally ill, Chinanews.com said, citing Guangshan authorities.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
NEW: Several of the children are in a critical state, state media report
The attack took place Friday morning at a primary school in Henan provincePolice say they have detained a 36-year-old local resident
China was hit by a spate of knife and cleaver attacks on school children in 2010
A number of measures were introduced at the time, including increased security at schools across the country and a regulation requiring people to register with their national ID cards when buying large knives.

Today's crime in Newtown, Connecticut is not a copy cat crime, since it occurred before the event in Connecticut  but an indication that banning guns or knives isn't the solution, but an indication that better protection in schools, armed guards, teachers, metal detectors perhaps and more awareness&better treatment of mental illness are needed.

LBN: Update: 12/20/12 9:39PM MST

Mourners laid to rest Catherine Hubbard, Benjamin Wheeler, Jesse Lewis and Allison Wyatt, all 6 years old; and Grace McDonnell, 7.
A service was held in Katonah, N.Y., for teacher Anne Marie Murphy, 52, who authorities believe helped shield some of her students from the rain of bullets.A memorial service for 30-year-old teacher Lauren Rousseau was also held today and a private funeral was held out of state for Nancy Lanza, the mother of Adam Lanza.
Gov. Dannel Malloy has asked people across Connecticut to observe a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. Friday, which will mark a week since the shootings. Places of worship and buildings with bells have been asked to ring them 26 times. Officials and clergy in many other states have said they will also participate.
12 of the 20 children have been buried as of today, along with three of the six staff members: the principal, and two teachers along with the mother of the madman, Adam Lanza.

Connecticut shooter left little for investigators to trace

Details emerge on Adam Lanza's past
Fox:reports the shooter had interest in joining military, but mother didn't think he could handle it;investigators examined school shooter's cell phone, but haven't found much,he didn't receive many calls, as he was anti-social;his computer hard drive has proven to be irretrievable;played violent video games in windowless room in basement of families home;26 bells will ring at 9:30am tomorrow to remember the Sandy Hook victims of last Fridays shooting.

LBN: Update: 12/18/12 5:14pm MST
Fox News reports Adam may have been upset over time his mother was spending tutoring at the elementary school and that she was talking about committing him for mental help and a psychiatric evaluation. Earlier reports had said they thought she worked there as a teacher, or substitute teacher or an aide, now they are saying she tutored students in the class he shot??

NY Daily News reports Adam destroyed his hard drive before the shooting.
ABC News reported Monday that Lanza possibly used a hammer or screwdriver to destroy the computer in a calculated effort.
“The hard drives are relatively durable, but if the platters are broken, it would  be impossible to recover information,” Abrahimi said.Lanza could have also known how to overwrite the data on the computer, essentially making it irretrievable.

ABC News also reports, the divorce mediator saying that Adam's mother didn't like leaving him alone.  There was no mention of any lingering mental health or medical issues for Adam Lanza, nothing that could even hint at the horror he would unleash three years later.   However, according to one source, speaking to Megyn Kelly on Fox News, said he may have been taking an anti-psychotic called Fanapt, which is normally used to treat schizophrenia.NYMag reports Adam's uncle said he was taking an anti-psychotic drug called Fanapt.
The Atlantic points out that several diagnoses have been bandied about in the press, including autism, Asperger's, and "personality disorder." Adam Lanza's mother had been increasingly concerned over her son's well-being in the weeks before the tragedy, telling a friend just a week before thathe was "getting worse", ‘he was burning himself with a lighter’ and that "she was losing him," the New York Daily News reported. That report makes no mention of Asperger's syndrome.
In working through the terms of their divorce, the couple spent considerable time talking about how to provide for Adam Lanza's well-being, said Paula Levy, a mediator who worked with the couple.During their meetings, the couple mentioned that Adam Lanza had been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, an autism-like disorder, Levy said. But the Lanzas were in complete agreement on how to address Adam's needs and said little about the details of his condition, Levy said. "The only two things I remember them saying is that she really didn't like to leave him alone and I know they went out of their way to accommodate him," said Levy, who recalled Nancy and Peter Lanza as very respectful of each other and equally concerned about their son's needs.

LBN: Update 12/16/12 10:54:PM MST

Friends and family portrayed Adam Lanza’s mother Nancy as a paranoid ‘survivalist’ who believed the world was on the verge of violent, economic collapse.
She is reported to have been struggling to hold herself together and had been stockpiling food, water and guns in the large home she shared with her 20-year-old son in Connecticut.
Mrs Lanza, 52, was a ‘prepper’ – so called because they are preparing for a breakdown in civilized society – who apparently became obsessed with guns and taught Adam and his older brother, Ryan, how to shoot, even taking them to local ranges.
Law enforcement sources told the Hartford Courant that she had not gotten up - and could have even been asleep - when her son killed her.

The disclosure raises the prospect that Adam could have had the same apocalyptic views as his mother, and that she could have even encouraged them in him.
The Mayan Apocalypse, which the ancient Mayan people thought would mark the end of the world, will supposedly take place on December 21, although it is not clear if Adam thought that was the case.Source: Daily Mail

LBN: Update 12/16/12 1:50 PM MST
Police:Adam Lanza and his mother, Nancy Lanza's identities are officially identified. The weapon primarily used was the Bushwhacker AR-15 assault rifle, the Glock and another sidearm, four weapons were recovered, the shotgun was recovered in the car outside of the school. He had at least 30 high capacity magazines with hundreds of bullets for all weapons and could have caused much more harm than he did. All weapons will be traced all the way back to when they were manufactured. Police issued another warning against anyone harassing or personally contact or by social media or telephone victims or families involved, or posing as the gunman on social media, for the media to respect families privacy and they are continuing to staff a trooper with all the families indefinitely. There are still things they can't answer nor discuss.
Police confirm there was a threat earlier at the Church where memorial services were being held, the type of threat was not known but these incidents will be investigated and the perpetrator will be charged to the full extent of the law.
Numerous search warrants have been issued. They have seized a great deal of evidence and every 'stitch' will be analyzed. Fox News reports the computer has been seized, and it is expected emails and the entire hard drive will be screened for additional evidence and answers.
According to anonymous law enforcement reports and the APthe gunman in the Connecticut shooting rampage shot his mother multiple times in the head before
going to the school and gunning down 26, authorities said Sunday as details
emerged suggesting that Adam Lanza had planned an even more gruesome massacre but was stopped short.

Lanza blasted his way into the building and used a high-power rifle to kill 20 children and six adults, including the principal who tried to stop him, authorities said.
The unthinkable bloodshed might even have been worse. Gov. Dannel Malloy said Lanza shot himself [in the head]as first responders entered the building and a law enforcement official said Lanza had "lots of ammo" on him when he died, enough to carry out significant additional carnage. The official [said]he was not authorized to release details of the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.
"We surmise that it was during the second classroom episode that he heard responders coming and apparently at that, decided to take his own life," Malloy said on ABC's "This Week."

The rifle used was a Bushmaster .223-caliber, according to an official with knowledge of the investigation who was not authorized to speak about it and talked on condition of anonymity. The gun is commonly seen at competitions and was the type used in the 2002 sniper killings in the Washington, D.C., area. Also found in the school were two handguns, a Glock 10 mm and a Sig Sauer 9 mm.
A law enforcement official said Saturday that authorities were investigating fresh leads that could reveal more about the lead-up to the shooting. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
Ginger Colbrun, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said earlier there was no evidence Lanza was involved in gun clubs or had trained for the shooting. When reached later in the day and asked whether that was still true, she said, "We're following any and all leads related to this individual and firearms."
Law enforcement officials have said they have found no note or manifesto from Lanza of the sort they have come to expect after murderous rampages such as the Virginia Tech bloodbath in 2007 that left 33 people dead.
However, an official timeline of events hasn't been released.
LBN: Update 12/16/12 1:42PM
Fox: Final autopsies taken on the mother and Adam Lanza, the mother was shot four times in the head according to AP reports, while still wearing her pajamas and was in bed, the gunman was found with a single gunshot wound to his head in the school....
[Wow he must have been really angry with her to do that...four times, she may have been sleeping when he killed her...I wonder if they know that yet?? These really smart, but disturbed loners are very dangerous, especially if they go undiagnosed and untreated for mental illness...what a total sociopath, no empathy...they say he also had some sort of condition that prevented him from feeling pain...apparently he didn't have much emotional maturity either, but he definitely knew how to show his anger&frustration. Police haven't said how long the mother had been dead and whether she was it happened, but it is a possibility he planned it while she was asleep so she couldn't fight back, knowing that she could use a gun against him.]

LBN: Update 12/15/12 4:10 PM List of Victims Names Released

LBN: Update 12/15/12 3:28 PM
Robbie Parker, father of one of the victims, Emilie Parker said friends set up a friends and donation page on facebook at Emilie Parker Fund. He says Adam acted with a God given right with freedoms he has a God given right to use and that he used his freedoms to do what he did[act with evil] and God can't take that away[or govt]. Her birthday was May 2006.

LBN Update 12/15/12 2:20pm MST: Fox reports the age of children were 6-7, eight were boys and 12 were girls, all six adults killed were women. The shooter was the only adult male killed by a self-inflicted gunshot.

LBN Update 12/15/12 1:40pm MST:Fox: The Medical Examiner, H Wayne Carver II, says all the victims were killed by gunshot, with three to eleven wounds each, he examined seven of the victims. He said the long range assault rifle caused most of the wounds. The bullets were found in the tissue of the victims, inflicted all over. He won't disclose the caliber of the weapon and will leave it to the police. He also said the families have not received contact with the bodies yet, but they used pictures to help identify the victims to reduce some of the gravity of the situation.

The children he examined were all first grade students, likely around the age of six or seven. Every victim was shot more than once according to other staff in the medical examiners office. The bodies of the victims were found "all over" according to the medical examiner. The police investigators will disclose how many cartridges were found. The goal was to get the kids out to the funeral directors first, he's unsure how many boys or girls were shot. He's not sure if the children have been returned to the parents for burial arrangements, but are available to move to the mortuary.

According to the lead police official, Connecticut police will post a list of the deceased on their state police web site within the next hour. This is still an active case and police are still pursuing leads and will do so for the next 48hrs. They aren't ready to give more definite information on the weapons used and the caliber of the weapons. However, it appears he used the assault rifle as his main weapon of choice, though earlier it was reported it was left in the car. There is no confirmed information on any previous confrontation between the shooter and staff as had been previously reported. The next news briefing will be reported tomorrow, if there is anything breaking they will post it to their web site. Police are asking for privacy for the families of the victims, after media have been reported harassing the families.
Paul Vance pled with reporters to respect the privacy of grieving families. Vance further stated that troopers had been assigned to the families specifically to protect them from intrusive inquiries from the media.
An FBI profiler, Mary Ellen O'Toole tells Fox News his use of the assault rifle showed he was determined to kill his victims. He chose helpless and vulnerable victims, assuring he would be able to kill a maximum number of people. These people were ''objects to him''. To go from child to child and with that caliber of weapon shows he saw these victims, as objects, not human beings.
NBC:UPDATED 1:33 p.m. ET: The gunman in the Newtown massacre tried unsuccessfully to buy a rifle three days before he killed 20 children, six adults and himself at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Connecticut and federal officials told NBC News Saturday.[the weapons he used were registered to his mother]
Adam Lanza, 20, went to a Dick's Sporting Goods store in Danbury, Conn., on Tuesday to buy the weapon, but was turned down because he didn't want to undergo a background check or abide by the state's waiting period for gun sales, the officials said.Previously, officials had said Lanza was armed with two pistols as he rampaged through the suburban school and that the weapons were legally purchased and registered to his mother, Nancy.
At a Saturday briefing, Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance said officials were tracing every weapon connected to the shooter. The motive for the mass killing was unknown, but officials told NBC's Pete Williams that they were investigating whether Lanza is the person who had an "altercation" with four staff members at the school on Thursday.
Three of the four were killed Friday in one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history. The fourth staff member was not at school that day and is being interviewed by federal and state investigators, Williams said.
Authorities have finished the heart-wrenching task of identifying the dead and said they would soon release the names.
The bodies have been removed from the school and taken to the medical examiner's office, but it could take at least two more days for investigators to finish combing over the crime scene.
Robert Licata said his 6-year-old son was in class when the gunman burst in and shot the teacher."That's when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door," he told The Associated Press. "He was very brave."

Sandy Hook Elementary principal Dawn Hochsprung died in the attack after reportedly running toward the gunfire to protect her students. TODAY's Erica Hill reports, and Savannah Guthrie talks with two men who knew her.[Sure would have been a better outcome if the principal or one of her staff members had a weapon on them to stop the shooter and distract his attention to get a direct hit.]
The school superintendent, Dr. Janet Robinson, said the body count would have been even higher if not for staff who rushed to protect their young charges. All of the dead were found in two rooms.
“A lot of children are alive today because of actions the teachers took,” she said. [While hiding the kids in closets and locking rooms down helped, if the principal or her staff were armed the shooter would not have been able to get passed the front office.]
The high death toll and the tender age of the victims sent shock waves across the nation and all the way to the White House, where the flag was lowered to half-staff.

LBN: Update 12:27pm MST:Fox reports today that all the victims have been positively identified, but the crime scene will not be complete for at least a couple days. Names of the victims are likely to be released later today. The police will continue to investigate inside and outside of the building, the entire area, including vehicles are considered part of the crime scene.

It is reported now that the mother may not have worked at the school&was not affiliated with the school, but he was not voluntarily let into the school...he forced his way into the school shooting out windows. According to Police  Lanza, 20, was not buzzed into Sandy Hook, where he was once a student.
“He forced his way into the school,” Vance said. He did not provide specifics and said that broken windows at the school may have been shattered by police who responded to the emergency.

NBC's Pete Williams reports that Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza attempted to purchase a rifle earlier this week at a sporting goods store in Danbury, Conn.
Several officials told NBC News that once Lanza was inside, he shot the 20 children at close range.
I have heard unconfirmed reports that it was Adam Lanza's elementary school and perhaps that is the reason he chose the school as a target. But why so many years later is still unexplained.[this has been confirmed in the update, but the motive is still unknown other than a possible altercation with former staff, one who is still alive.]

The police say they have found some 'good evidence' that might explain a motive. Much of the evidence was found at the home of the shooter where he lived with his mother, Nancy. Adam was estranged from his father several years after the parents went through a divorce in 2008 after a long marriage. His brother Ryan Lanza said he hadn't seen his brother since at least 2010. According to authorities, one survivor may have some insight which could help explain what happened, but any motive is not clear at this time.

However, the biggest questions remain unanswered: why did he do it and what could have been done to prevent it or stop him?

As you will read in the following post a country like China has strict gun control laws, but mass murders and violence still occur. If they don't use a gun, they will use a knife, a bomb or some other method. Those who are intent on harming/killing others and who are suicidal are determined and will find a way to accomplish their mission regardless of laws, just like a suicide bomber/terrorist. It's stopping them in the act or preventing these attacks that needs to be addressed through better security measures and greater awareness of troubled individuals.

Former NYPD Detective John Baeza told Fox News this morning they need to train teachers and staff to be armed to protect themselves and the children. "It could have saved more students and staff."  I tend to agree...read more about why I agree and what Israel does to prevent such occurrences.
Pictured: Adam Lanza, seen here in 2005[at age 13], killed his mother at her Connecticut home before killing 20 elementary school students and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn, authorities said

Lanza’s mother, Nancy Lanza — who worked at the school[as a teacher's aide per ABC] — was found dead at her Newtown home, CBS News reported. After Lanza allegedly shot and killed his mother, he drove her car to the school, where he opened fire on adults and children, 1010 WINS’ Al Jones reported.

Connecticut Police LT Paul Vance said 18 children and 6 adults, including the school’s principal Dawn Hochsprung, were pronounced dead at that scene. Two other children later died at the hospital. One other person was injured, Vance said.
Per ABC 12/14/2012:
9:37 p.m.: A Sig Sauer and a Glock semi automatic handgun were used in the slaying and that .223 shell casings – a round used in a semi automatic military style rifle—were also found.
7:53 p.m.: Connecticut State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance said at a news conference that would be no more pressers tonight and they will not be releasing the identities of the victims tonight. “We’ve never seen anything like this. It’s heart wrenching for us,” Vance said.
My heart breaks for anyone who has to endure the suffering these families in China and here in Connecticut are going through tonight. My youngest son is in kindergarten and this really hit close to my heart and makes you think how short life can be. One minute you are taking your kids to school, dropping them off, with a hug and kiss and the next they could be gone.

As one mom said..."schools are supposed to be safe", but as we all know they are no longer safe and nowhere is truly safe from evil. We can be attacked in our own homes, schools, stores, anywhere. We live in a society of mixed people, mixed backgrounds and people from many walks of life.

Unfortunately, children from broken homes like Adam Lanza are most likely to come from poverty, live in violent conditions and/or suffer from depression or some form of mental illness, behavior problems or drug addiction. In this case it appears that he had a learning disorder and also may have had a personality disorder, and an undiagnosed mental illness like schizophrenia.

Ynet News reports:
Ryan Kraft, 25, who was a neighbor of the Lanza family, told the Washington Post that the divorce hit the children hard.
"The kids seemed really depressed” by the breakup, Kraft (25) said of the Lanza brothers.

Kraft told The Washington Post that when Nancy Lanza would go out to dinner with friends, she sometimes relied on him to watch Adam Lanza, who was too boisterous for Ryan Lanza to manage. "He would have tantrums," Kraft said. "They were much more than the average kid (had)." However, Kraft said, he was not prone to violence.

Another former neighbor said Adam Lanza was on medication. According to a law enforcement official, a family member told investigators that he had a form of autism.
A second former classmate, who declined to be identified, described Lanza as smart but without many friends.
He said he met Lanza when both boys joined the local Boy Scout troop. At that time, he said Lanza was a big fan of Japanese culture, collecting Pokemon cards and playing the PlayStation video game Dynasty Warriors, a weapons-based animated fighting game released in the late 1990s.
"He was a very quiet kid," the friend said. "I remember being his only friend in elementary school. He was always a really nice kid, very polite."
A man who knew Lanza in high school told the Washington Post that "He always seemed like a quiet type. He was never really sociable. When you try to communicate with him, he would just kind of like have one- or two-word responses.
"He was a wicked smart kid, he excelled in everything," the man said. "He graduated high school three years early."
האח הגדול רייאן. "ייתכן שאחי סבל מהפרעת אישיות"
'My brother may have had personality disorder.' Adam's older brother Ryan
Lanza’s brother told police the gunman had a history of mental problems, though a classmate from Newtown High School recalled him as a generally happy person.“We would hang out, and he was a good kid,” Joshua Milas, who had not seen Lanza in a few years, told The Associated Press. “He was probably one of the smartest kids I know. He was probably a genius.”

However, he knew what he was doing, despite reports that he may have suffered from autism or asperger's syndrome and possibly undiagnosed mental illness. Neighbors said the Connecticut shooter, Adam Lanza, always acted 'odd' and appeared mentally ill. While children with autism and asperger's can have odd behavior, some can become violent.

Alleged shooter’s guns belonged to his mother

Investigators believe the gunman shot his mother at home, where he lived with her, and are researching the suspected gunman’s writings, looking for any clues as to what might have precipitated one of the worst mass shootings in history. NBC’s Pete Williams reports.

His mother owned the guns, why she felt compelled to own so many weapons and where he obtained the ammunition are unknown at this time. The weapons he used were were legally purchased and registered to his mother, two law enforcement officials said. Two 9mm handguns were recovered inside the school. An AR-15-type rifle also was found outside. How he obtained the weapons is another question to consider. Update: It has come out that Adam and his mother went target shooting together and she was an avid gun collector and target shooter. My question is: Did she think it was therapeutic to have an unstable son learn to use guns??

Dan Holmes, owner of a landscaping firm, described Nancy Lanza as an avid gun collector who once showed him a "high-end rifle" that she had purchased.

"She said she would often go target shooting with her kids," he said.
Holmes said he had just last week decorated her yard with Christmas garlands and lights.
She was "very nice, very pleasant and always very appreciative of our work," Holmes said.

For those who want to impose gun control laws on the mentally ill, the US already has laws against the mentally ill obtaining weapons:
Federal Law:
Under 18 U.S.C. § 922(d), it is unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of any firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person “has been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution.”
Considering he obtained all the weapons from his mother and ammo and was able to use them, as well as drive the car to the elementary school where his mom worked tell me he was not so crazy that he didn't know what he was doing. I'm sure he knew the difference from right and wrong, as most sociopaths and mass murderers do.  The officials said he had four handguns on him as he stormed the 600-student school and shot his victims – clustered in two classrooms – at close range. There was a rifle found in the car he drove to Sandy Hook.

The New York Times reports further on his well being saying: Newtown shooter described by classmates as intelligent but uncomfortable in social situations. It was also reported that Adam Lanza was an honors student, but described as "deeply disturbed." According to the NY Daily News, Adam Lanza ....was a deeply disturbed kid,” a family insider told the Daily News. “He certainly had major issues. He was subject to outbursts from what I recall.”
Lanza, who friends and officials said suffered from Asperger’s syndrome&or a personality disorder, had  a tortured mind.
He was socially awkward and at times unstable, but also extraordinarily bright.
“He was smart,” the insider said.
“He was like one of these real brainiac computer kind of kids.”
A “longtime” family friend said Lanza had a condition “where he couldn’t feel pain.
“A few years ago when he was on the baseball team, everyone had to
be careful  that he didn’t fall because he could get hurt and not feel it,”
said the friend. “Adam had a lot of mental problems.”
Lanza walked the halls of his middle school carrying a black briefcase
while most students lugged their belongings in backpacks. “That stuck out,” said Tim Lalli, 20,who graduated with Lanza in 2010. “It was different.”
Of course this doesn't excuse his behavior and the actions he took, but it does give some insight into the type of person he was. As often the case, many of these mass shooters are described as silent types, loners, or odd, bullied in some way or outcasts that never seem to fit in.

It seems in these cases most of the shooters end up killing themselves, however the few that have not admit to having some sort of vengeance  anger and frustration built up inside of them. Apparently Adam Lanza had an undiagnosed mental illness in addition to his autism and personality disorder/behavior problems, which likely led him to have problems expressing his anger and frustrations.

What's sad is most of the recent mass shootings lately have been by young men in their early 20's, from Jared Lee Loughner (Gabby Giffords), Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech), or James Holmes (Colorado movie theater) all individuals who were described as mentally unstable,  which is also an age where many males are diagnosed with schizophrenia. Perhaps these shooters went undiagnosed??

I don't know what it is about males and that age, but for some reason they become more susceptible to mental illness. Often schizophrenia also runs in families. It's not known if Adam Lanza suffered from this disorder, but it can be a disorder that can go misunderstood and undiagnosed especially if they already have another disability or disorder which impairs their normal behavior such as autism or aspergers.

Coincidentally, since Obama's election in 2008, there have been at least 13 mass shootings in the US from workplace shootings, to terrorism and school shootings.
There appears to be a connection to the failing economy and desperation people are feeling during these uncertain times...how much worse will things get once more people lose their jobs under Obama's failed economic policies and plans to increase tax rates on the top 2% who are often small businesses??

An article I came across on twitter today offered some solutions for protecting children and teachers from such violence. Chicago News Bench, says:

What should have happened: Somebody could have shot Adam Lanza, stopping him in his tracks. Unfortunately, it seems, nobody in the school was armed. Schools are known to law enforcement as being attractive targets for criminally insane people bent on killing. That fact
makes it hard to understand why so few schools have armed guards to protect the children and staff.

"One thing the public can do to help guard against these incidents is to be alert to warning signs of (a) person's behavior that might lead to this kind of (violent) response," MyFoxLA quoted Lt. Vernon as saying. "After-action studies of shootings often reveal that signs of depression, anger, planning, bragging, (or) threatening were ignored."
Again, the glaringly obvious was omitted by Lt. Vernon: It is good to "be alert," but once it becomes obvious that a madman is wielding a gun in the school it would be rather handy to have anarmed teacher, principal, guard or other school employee able to respond with deadly
force, thereby saving lives.
About the graphic in this post: I first saw the image posted to Twitter today and researched it to find its origin. The
original photo (left) was taken by "TeeJaw" and posted on his "TeeJaw Blog" on July 23, 2011 in a post titled "Murder In
Norway." TeeJaw was writing about the massacre of 77 people on Utøya Island by madman Anders Breivik on July 22, 2011. As in Connecticut today, nobody on Utøya Island was armed.

According to the blog "Plancks Constant": Israel began the program of armed citizen guards in the schools after the Maalot massacre in the 1970s, when a large number of children were slain in a terrorist incident. The volunteer parents work in plain clothes, armed with concealed semi-automatic pistols, and are trained by Israel's home guard. It is significant that in the more than a quarter century between Maalot and the incident mentioned above when the citizen guards shot down the terrorist in the school in 2002, not a single child was murdered in an Israeli school!
The reason is that Israel wisely publicized the fact that the civilian volunteer guards, indistinguishable from the regular teaching and administrative staff, would be in place. It served as a tremendously effective deterrent.
While these solutions seem pretty obvious, the anti-gun lobbyists&politicians don't seem to think self defense is the best solution when dealing with an armed shooter. However, when police respond and arrive on the scene, do they come unarmed?? No!! Only guns stop shooters.
Update: Watch the above graphic video on what happens when citizens are disarmed.
"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." - George Santayana. What happens when self defense is against the "law"? What happens when the protectors become the predictors? What happens when Innocents are betrayed?
After the most recent and heinous shooting of innocent young lives in Newtown, Connecticut there has been a growing hysteria by the media and liberals to push gun control laws. However, what we should be supporting is better security and better prepared teachers and staff, including training and arming teachers and volunteer parents like they do in Israel. A new petition has been started to counter the anti-gun petition which has been circulating online: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/gun-every-classroom-arm-every-teacher-and-principal-defend-themselves-and-their-students-during/BR1Wj8cc
Therefore, we should be advocating for safer schools by providing better security rather than disarming law abiding citizens who could act as neutralizers during a shooting incident.
